Dell precision m6700 problem
Hello,
I have a strange problem with my m6700 laptop. When I switch on the laptop, the harddisk indicator light is on for about 2 seconds. Then the light switches off, and after about 1 second the harddisk light switches on again (not flashing), the battery charging light switches on (flashing white) and the wifi light switches on (not flashing). The screen is black. This is the 3rd time in 2 weeks that this problem occurs. The previous 2 times the problem disappeared after a couple of hours, but not because of my actions. I tried the usual things, taking the memory chips out and resetting them, taking the harddisks out and resetting them, tried a lot of keyboard combinations etc but no results. The laptop just starts working after I have pushed the power on button for 100s of times.
Configuration:
Windows 10, 16gb memory, ssd harddrive with operating system, 2 regular hard drives with data. 2 original dell batteries, 1 original dell power adapter.
I have tried to start it up just with the battery, just with the power adapter, and with both. Always with the same result. I hope it will start working again, but I would like to know what could cause this problem. Nothing is connected to the usb ports.

Given the symptoms and age of the system, it's most likely a bad system board that needs to be replaced.

After a couple of hours of trying, the laptop works again. I read somewhere in a service manual for Dell laptops (not specifically for this model) that harddisk light on, battery light flashing and wifi light on, means a memory problem. I took the 2 memory modules out (8gb each), restarted the laptop without memory, with battery installed and AC adapter connected, and the screen switched on again. Of course the bios screen showed a no memory error. So I switched off the laptop, inserted the 2 memory modules, restarted and the laptop works fine. But I am still wondering what could cause this problem.
