PCIe Gen3 vs. Gen4 SSD in Precision 3541
Another question about my Precision 3541:
The documentation lists the following SSD storage type in the storage section of the Setup & Specifications Guide:
M.2 2280 solid-state drive PCIe NVMe |
PCIe Gen3x4 NVMe, up to 32 Gbps |
Up to 2 TB |
Does this exclude a Gen4 M.2 2280 NVMe SSD? Crucial lists their T500 Gen4 SSD as compatible. Wondering if that can be trusted.
Thanks.

Just like a USB 3 drive can be used on a USB 2 port, Gen 4 NVMe drive is backward compatible with your device and will operate at Gen 3 speed. So, yes, Crucial drive will work.

Yes, the Precision 3541 does support 4TB of PCIe Gen 4 NVMe SSD. It will operate at Gen 3 speed.
Check compatible storage from Crucial https://www.crucial.com/compatible-upgrade-for/dell/precision-3541

When storage uses standard technology users should be able to upgrade with any maximum capacity available in the markets.
