Cannot scan with with photo aio printer 924

I have a aio 924 that would not install print and scan drivers drivers from either the dell installation CD or from the Dell driver download to my hard drive.  Operating system is XP and computer is Compaq 6710b.

I was finally able to install print drivers manually using add printer function.  Printer works fine and over wireless network.

Issue is that I cannot scan, nor can I figure out how to install Dell All-in-one Center for the 924 since my installation software from dell doesn't work on the Compaq.

Any clue on how I can get the scan function to work?

Aaron,

Please follow the instructions below and then tell me what happens.

First, let's make sure your computer has the latest Windows Updates, especially .net framework, needed to run many applications and the latest Java.

Disconnect your printer.

Download and run this patch to completely remove the printer from your computer. Run the patch, a MUST on Vista machines, until it prompts you to restart your computer.

Restart your computer.

Download the proper drivers.

XP Drivers

Vista 32-bit Drivers

Vista 64-bit Drivers.

All other drivers

Install the proper drivers.(ONLY install the drivers you need) You'll be prompted when to connect your printer(powered on)

As for scanning, if you have the disk that came with the printer, then insert the Printer disk and stop it from running. Go to My Computer and double click on it. Look for the drive with the Dell disk in it. Right click on it, left click explore. Look for the OCR Folder. In the OCR Folder, there is an Abbyy Folder. right click on setup.exe, that's in the Abbyy Folder and left click run as administrator. This will install the OCR program.

Scanning

Scanning using USB connection, open the Dell All-In-One Center, click on scanning and copying and scan from there.

Scanning wirelessly, use the scan buttons on the printer.

budgora12,

Windows Updates and Java GREAT! :emotion-21:

The Dell All-In-One Center is in the drivers package. If the printer is not installed with Dell's drivers, it's possible that you're getting some type of generic drivers from Microsoft. Had many devices stop working or malfunction because of these drivers.

Did you disocnnect the printer and run the patch(which is a printer cleanup utility) to remove the printer from your computer? If using Vista, I don't know if you can use the option to run as administrator or not. If so, run as administrator. It will remove all the printer drivers from your computer. It will prompt you to restart your computer.

(add extra step)

Installing the proper drivers. I have noticed that some drivers the folder just unzips. If this is the case, then right click on the setup.exe file and then left click run as administrator. You will then be given the option on how you want to install the printer. What do you have the 924 printer connected to? Another computer or a wireless print server?

If it doesn't install, then repeat the above and then where you see add extra step, they do this first.

(Extra step)

Go to device manager(right click my computer, left click properties, left click hardware, left click device manager)

Go to the USB Controller section and click the + sign.

Starting at the bottom, USB Root Hubs, and working your way to the top, USB Universal Controllers, un-install everything in that section.

Restart your computer. Windows will find everything again and correct the problem one. Please be patient. The new hardware wizard may work 3-5 minutes before it's done.

Unfortunately your recommendations do not work.

Let's start with versions of Java and .Net.  These are Java 6 update 15 and .Net framework 3.5 sp1.  So they are the latest.

Secondly, since I am unable to use my installation disk to install all software I had to manually install the printer driver.  That worked and I am able to print to the 924 (wirelessly I might add).

What I cannot do is scan, nor install the Dell-All-in-One Center.

How do I find installation software for All-inOne-Center.  Is it somewhere on my installation CD?

By the way, i did install the Abbyy OCR software but it does not recognize that I have a scanner.

What next?

I have xp OS.  The patch seems to be made for Vista.

Is that correct?

budgora12,

The patch is really a printer cleanup utility and I have everyone use it to clean out all the old printer drivers so they can get a clean start.
