OL2K--Can Send But Not Receive E-mail

In switching OL2K from IMO to CW I gained a few advantages. However, it seems I can send but not receive e-mail. I sent a few test messages to myself. They show up in Outlook Express and also on the e-mail server (Comcast). But I get this error message if I click on Send/Receive in OL:

"Deliver Message: Checking for new messages and sending outgoing messages..." This is followed after about a minute with "Internet E-mail: Some messages couldn't be retrieved from the server. This usually happens when the connection to the server is lost due to server or network problems. If the problem persists contact your administrator."

My administrator of my one computer "network" would be me and I contacted my Internet provider. I confirmed that all the settings were correct. No success. I switched back to IMO and had no problem getting e-mail. Switched back again and ran into the same problem.

Anybody have any idea what to do? I would rather not use OL in the IMO mode--unless there is a way to get the Select Names window to display names in File As (Last Name, First Name). This feature seems to be found only in the CW mode.

If you don't have an exchange server you cannot use CW, so switch back to IMO. You can set the name order in either configuration. Look up Display the Contacts list in LastName, FirstName format in Help for complete instructions. Basically here's how you do it:

This is for Outlook 2003, but Outlook 2000 should have similar easier instructions. I seem to remember clicking or right clicking on the "File as" header in the Address Book and selecting name order. You should also explore the View menu in Address Book.

Start Outlook. .
On the Tools menu, click E-mail accounts.
Click View or change existing directories or address books, and then click Next.
Click Outlook Address Book, and then click Change.
Under Outlook Address Books, click the address book for which you want to change the contact display format . For example, click Contacts: Personal Folders or Contacts: Mailbox – Mailbox name, and then click File As (Smith, John).
Click Close, and then click Finish.
Quit and restart Outlook.

Thanks! Missed that little bit about needing an Exchange Server. The sort of thing you think MS would point out but what the heck. Switching back to IMO clear up the e-mail issue. However, I think there may be some serious differences between OL@K and 2003. When I go to Tool, Accounts, I get one account--my e-mail account. I can add either (1) Mail, which merely means establishing another e-mail account or (2) Directory Service, which seems to be some sort of internet connection. No mention of an OL Address Book. On the other hand, once OL is running I can click on Tools, Address Book (never realized that!) and something appears that looks exactly like the "Address Book" from OL Express. (Why the Address Book and Contacts List would be different things with apparently with much of the same data is beyond me) I can't seem to figure out how to change the order of names in the Address Book. Snce I have always used the Contacts List to do things--send mail, get phone numbers, etc.--there may be no point to pursuing the Address Book issue --unless this where the Select Names window draws its content. That is where I want to control the way the names display.
