Works9 does not open .docx attachments when reading browser based email (Hotmail)

When reading my Hotmail emails, I often want to open the attachments from the browser. I can do that without having to save the attachment to disk, on all PCs where Office2007 is installed. Not on my Dell Inspiron1370 with only Works.

Works is fine and offers enough functionality for wife and kids. But it is annoying that they first need to save to disk before being able to read the contents.

I noticed that .pdf files open fine from the browser in Acrobat Reader for example. Also, the .docx files open fine when opening them from the Documents folder.

The error message indixates the file type is not supported, or the file is in use by another programme.

Anybody who maneged to configure the system such that opening .docx files works without saving to disk?

Assuming Works will display (read) .docx MS Word files, do you have that file type associated with the Works WordProcessor?  If not that could be the problem.   If have Office 2003 and had to download an import filter from Microsoft before I could open .docx files.

File associations work OK, when double clicking a .docx file from the Explorer window. It will start Works, and the file is displayed OK.

The issue seems to be related to the fact that (when opening an attachment from Hotmail) the files are opened from a Temporary Files location. Not sure if this is an issue related to access right on the temporary files, or that the application Works cannot work with temp files.

I did download the compatibility programs for Office2007 format, but that does not seem to be the problem.

BTW: I did not configure anything sofar, just started working on the Dell machine out-of-the-box. And I run as an Administrator and should thus have access rights top the folders.

I have a hotmail account but I don't recall ever getting a docx attachement.  I have received doc attachments and they open OK but then I have MS Office and not MS Works.

This is not a "real" fix for your problem, but you may want to consider the free Open Office suite of programs that are comparable and compatible with MS Office.  They will open a docx file without any import filters, etc.  Much better than Works (and free).  www.openoffice.org   Ubuntu Linux comes with the Open Office suite and I recently got a new Netbook (Win 7 starter OS) that came with Open Office installed.
