R730XD H730P Mini -> HBA330 Mini

Is it normal for an HBA330 Mini to cause the fans to spin up to 100%? I ended up having to disable a setting via IPMI just to get it to slow to 53%. I ran into a similar issue before with a single storage device causing the fans to ramp up to ~75, but never to 100%.

The H730P card didn't have this issue. However for my use case with ZFS, a true HBA device would be beneficial.

Hi yes, it's within the realm of "normal" for an HBA330 Mini to cause aggressive fan behavior in an R730XD, even up to 100%, particularly if the server's firmware defaults to a high fan speed for certain add-in cards. Your solution of using IPMI to adjust the fan control is the standard way to mitigate this and achieve a more acceptable noise level while still ensuring adequate cooling.

The 53% fan speed you achieved with the IPMI setting is likely a good compromise, giving you the benefits of a true HBA for ZFS without the constant roar of 100% fans. Just keep an eye on your component temperatures to ensure everything stays within safe limits.

Do you know which specific IPMI setting you disabled? Knowing that might offer more insight into why the fans were ramping up so high.

The setting specifically was the "Third-Party PCIe Card Default Cooling Response Logic" and I set that to Disabled.

With the H730P Mini installed having that setting Enabled didn't cause any issue, except when I had one third party SATA SSD installed. Figured that out and removed it. The normal fan speed was around 20% - 35%. But like I said before, after installing the HBA330 Mini it was at a constant 100%.

Changed a few settings, including the CPU power management profile, and that seemed to get it down to 42%. With the default cooling logic still disabled. Ended up manually setting a 35% speed via IPMI.

I'm somewhat glad to hear it's a "normal" response so I'm not wondering aimlessly through settings. 😂😅
