Here are the steps you will want to follow:
- Stop Exchange services on the Source.
- Rename the Source Exchange machine to its new name. This deletes the computer object from AD, but does not remove the computer from the domain.
- Rename the Target machine to the original Exchange name (what the Source was just previously named).
- Install Exchange using the /DisasterRecov ery switch + apply the same SP for Exchange that exists on the Source..
- Rename the Target back to its original hostname.
- The end result now, is that both the Source and Target have there own hostname and are not named what the Exchange instance is.
- Run the RepliStor Exchange module. This will create the virtual Exchange object in AD.
- Restart the Source as part of the installation.
- Active the Alias to start Exchange.

If any thing is unclear about the above and why it is done, let me know and I would be happy to answer.

Duncan,

Thanks for the response. The part about removing the computer object from AD but not removing the computer and the fact that the exchange module creates the alias is what I really needed to understand!

Thank you for clarifying that for me!

Thanks! This helped in allowing me to explain to the customer why the upgrade needed to be done this way.
