Computer won't start except in safe mode; says it needs to check disk but that doesn't help
My computer has frozen a couple times in the last few days, and the last time it froze when I restarted it it said it needed to check one of the disks for consistency. It did a lot of stuff, said it deleted a ton and recovered a ton, but when it restarted my computer it wouldn't move past the blue Vista Welcome screen. When I skip the disk check process, it gets to the desktop but you can't click anything. If I start it in Safe Mode, it starts and works OK, but I have a ton of information I need off of the regular mode. Any ideas? Has this happened to anyone else? Is there a way to get my info off of it so I can try wiping it? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Sounds like the hard drive is toast. To confirm, F12 at powerup, Dell diagnostics. Run an extended test on the drive. Any failure - replace the drive.
Once the drive is replaced and the OS is reloaded, connect the faulty drive to a secondary channel and see what you can copy.

surely you can just use the safe mode to get off any docs etc. if you want to try and take programs off thats not going to happen as theres lots of registry settings and files you will miss. if you still have problem in safe mode you could try one of the options here http://www.mypchealth.co.uk/GuideRecovery.php

Not a business, just a rather mediocre support site. Wow, there aren't enough of those! :emotion-40:

John.
After reading the site more carefully, I have to agree. :emotion-4:
