I don't think Dell really endorses a 3rd party product one way or another. However, LG Electronics has a good lightscribe product. You may want to check out their website and see what they have to offer.

I have the External GSA-2166D and I like it a lot.

thank you so much.  that's what I was looking for if they made it the external unit but I was not sure where to look for one.  I'll check out LG electronics today.  Where do you buy your disc/cd that you need at the best price?  thank you for your help.  Lady J

I was over looking at the Sure thing forum for light scribe and someone has the same GSA 2166D and is having trouble with the quality of the disc.  I tried to find a site for the LG Electronics and would like a link if you have one.  Also have post into the tech at MVD forum asking about systems.  I found a unit MeritLine.com for $102.00 but didn't find anything in the forums on the lightscribe.  Maybe you can help also with where you got yours  Thanks, JMS

Click on the Computer Products link.

The link to the external drive is about mid page.

I purchased mine at Best Buy. It was around $130.00 and their was a deal of $30.00 off at the time.

I personally have had no problems with mine and I have had it for just about 6 months.

Thank you again and i'm off to find one.  I've got cd's going out in book form and I just think this is a wonderful idea over paper labels.  Jacki

Jacki,

Please do not expect an explosion of colors and vivid details on the CD's when you scribe an image onto them. You can only do so much with "16 shades of gray." It works well but it is not spectacular. At least not yet. I imagine as the technology improves so will the imaging that can be detailed on a CD/DVD.

Don't get me wrong as it does work but please don't over expect the results and you won't be dissapointed.

Thank you for your help.  I understand the concept.  I went to a few places to find one.  Best buys $30.00 rebate was expired.  I finally found the lg site and found the GSA one and when I clicked back it went to best by for $96.00 so I guess that worked.  I ordered the Verbatuim disc while I was there so I'll be a happy camper in a couple of days.  I think as the tech improves so will the quality.  I just think that this is a great alternative to paper disc.  Do you use Surething label program or does it come with it's own.  I only ask because I was reading the discussions about people wanting the 5.0 that sure thing is coming out with that fixes a few problems.  I have my paper disc saved in Sure thing.  Will it be easy to use that one?

Thanks so much for your help.  Jacki

The drive comes with Nero Express and that has the Light Scribe feature in it. If you have a program that you like already and are used to it and it has the light scibe function already installed, just go ahead and use that. The Nero works just fine for me.

Although I have downloaded the Sure Thing software from the lightscribe website, I have not used it yet so I can't tell you how they compare to each other.

Have fun with the new "toy". It is cool!! :smileywink:

I have a new Inspiron 6000 laptop being delivered today so I'm gonna be geekin' out for the next couple of days. :smileytongue:

I use to run Nero on a computer back a few,  it was actually one of the simpler programs.  I'll let you know.  I just got the desk top 310 a few weeks ago so between the two dells now i'm pretty set.  The other one is only  two years old but dell had a special I couldn't pass up.  So enjoy your new toy also.  New things are fun....it's never to late to have a happy childhood.  Lady J
