\windows\system32\error corrupt or missing

Like many people here I've had a registry failure, I've performed the dell diagnostic scan and got

Error Code 0F00:0244
Msg: Block 6399334: Uncorrectable data error or media is write protected

Error Code: 0F00:0244
Msg Block : 21091604   ( same reason as above)

I'm not sure what these really mean, if theres a way to fix them or not and was hoping some one here would know. I'm trying to use Bart PE to get at my hard drive to remove the files before a format but its impossible as it keeps going back to the black screen with " \windows\system32\error

Those are only 2 of the errors, there are more but I figure they're all the same.

Any one have any idea on what I can do?

The safest way to proceed:

Remove the drive, mount it into a 2.5" external USB drive case (SATA or PATA, depending on the notebook/drive model) and attach it to a working system by USB. Take ownership of the files you need to copy (see link below for XP; Vista is slightly different), and copy the files to the host system's hard drive.

You'll need a new drive - this one is failing - if the system is under warranty, call Dell with the error message and they'll ship you a warranty replacement.

If it's out of warranty, you need the same type and size (2.5", 9.5 mm, PATA or SATA) you have now to replace it.

Taking ownership:

Any hard drive can fail at any time for a host of reasons - bumps, manufacturing defects, heat, time, age ...
