Buggy support assist, new version 4.0

Support assist updated to version 4.0 recently with a new interface and are just been buggy every since. It makes my Alienware 17r3 stutters and freeze for a brief second every 15 minutes. Only way to eliminate the problem is to set every SA related tasks to manual in task manager so the processes don't start automatically at startup. If I want to run SA I manual start the tasks SupportAssist and Dell Techub. Not ideal but works for now until dell fixes it. If they do that is.

Have you experienced any problems with the new version of Support Assist?

@jsuvman yeah, I thought my pc had issue cause after the last 4.0 installation, I tried many drivers and app to get my support assist working normally, but it didn't so, I had to restore my pc to previous point and it crashed along the way.

I immediately restore the pc to factory mode afterward, I got some of my files back and finally, to now reinstall support assist 4.0 is now impossible no matter how hard I try, I only see 3.14 version

@xpsman79 Same here. Dell's going downhill, I'm afraid.

@xpsman79 Got a new Dell PC (16 Plus 7630) a week or so ago.  Running Windows 11.  Same problem.  SupportAssist version 4.0.1 endless spinning wheel.  Then some messages that said we are updating SupportAssist, close this window and try again later.  Contacted chat support and they installed a version 3 that works.  3 hours of fun and games with trying to get SupportAssist to run.

@jsuvman best answer. Same thing happened here. Had the support assist v4 installed. Then it asked a bios update. I did it. After that it stopped working properly not allowing the machine to update drivers.

So I uninstalled it following all the steps provided from dell. Using the regular uninstaller, then MS removal tool.

Downloaded the current version of supportAssist installer on dell website. But it gives me the version 3.14. Won't let me update to v.4 and give me the same problem updating drivers asking to try again later.

So, I believe dell must be working on some update of this specific software. They should let customers aware of that. But, they must have their reasons not to do so.

Anyways, waiting for the software to get back to its regular operation.

Hi @ThomasAAT:

Just an FYI that employee DELL-Chris M just announced the release of SupportAssist v4.0.6 today in their 11-Apr-2024 topic SupportAssist 4.0.6 Available.  Unfortunately, that topic was locked immediately after it was posted so you'll have to go hunting in other topics for user feedback on what bugs, if any, that v4.0.6 has fixed.

As far as I can tell the SupportAssist v4.0 release notes at https://www.dell.com/support/home/en-us/product-support/product/dell-supportassist-pcs-tablets/docs haven't been updated since v4.0.0 was released on 01-Feb-2024.

Dell Support Assist version 4 does not allow you to create a profile or sign in.

Instead it says we ran into a problem would you like to try again, and you get the same message

CORRECTION:

DELL-Chris M just modified the title of that 11-Apr-2024 topic to SupportAssist 4.0.2 Available.

Hello, I uninstalled SA 3.14.2 completely (also removed SA Remedition and recovery plugin)

I downloaded the SA 4.02 from the page mentioned (topic to SupportAssist 4.0.2 Available.), but ver 3.14 installed again on my Vostro 3020.

Is any workaround to install the SA 4.02?

If you're trying to update to SupportAssist v4 and happen to use Notepad++, please don't - and count yourself lucky if you can't. This "update" will desroy sensitive data as part of its optimization program, more details on that here: SupportAssist v4 cleanup deletes sensitive data

I’m seeing crash issue in SA 4. Dell support asked me to reinstall system and it fixed the crash I spent couple days for reinstallation…

Now crash came back due to Support assist automatically installed version 4.0.3.

they keep installing this buggy version. Now I uninstalled Support assist.

how can I stay with previous working version?

@DELL-Chris M Was that last post supposed to mean anything? Where are the changelogs? Has SupportAssist stopped behaving like malware, deleting sensitive user data? I guess not.

Just an FYI that employee DELL-Chris M posted SupportAssist, "Hardware scan fails", "We ran into a problem" today (10-Jun-2024) about upcoming fixes for a few of the known bugs in SupportAssist v4.0.x.
