Dell support assist buggy

Hi,

I have issues with the new version of Support Assist. On first click to open the program it hangs on the preparing screen. Then I have to close it and open it a second time for it to complete loading the program. Once the program loads, it takes forever, but will complete the first two tasks on the list, but then error out on the remaining tasks. Any suggestions on a fix?

Hi C1vette:

See my 02-Jan-2025 post in WjSturgis' Support Assist Will Not Run about known bugs in recent releases of SupportAssist v4.6.x.

If a clean reinstall of the current SupportAssist v4.6.3 (see employee DELL_Nat M's 03-Apr-2024 instructions <here>) does not solve your problem post back and let us know your Dell computer model, Windows operating system [open a run dialog box (Windows key + R) and enter winver to find your version and OS build number] and BIOS version [open a Run dialog box, enter msinfo32 to open your System Information panel, and look for the “BIOS Version/Date” field].  It would also be helpful to know if your Dell service warranty has expired yet.

Hi C1vette:

What is the exact model number of your G7 laptop (e.g., G7 17 7790, etc.)?

If you enter your unique Service Tag at https://www.dell.com/support/home/en-us/products this should re-direct you to the correct support page for your computer model and display a filtrated list of Dell software and hardware drivers compatible with your system components.  If you're lucky there may be a standalone Dell update utility (e.g., Dell Command | Update v5.4.0, Dell Update for Windows Universal v5.4.0, etc.) you can use to check for available updates until Dell finally releases a stable version of SuppportAssist v4.x. ***

If you check your Reliability Monitor does it show any errors logged for Dell.CoreServices.Client.exe?  If so see Rockfac's 03-Dec-2024 SupportAssist Issue, since this particular bug seems to be more prevalent on Win 11 v24H2 systems.

At this point I'm afraid your best option is to simply wait for the next release of SupportAssist to see what bug fixes are included.  As I noted in my 02-Jan-2025 post in WjSturgis' Support Assist Will Not Run, the next release is supposed to include a fix for a bug that can cause database files in the C:\ProgramData\Dell\DTP\DB folder to grow over time and consume excessive amounts of disk space (sometimes in excess of 100 GB), resulting in poor system performance.

-------------------------------------

*** Just FYI, I uninstalled all SupportAssist-related programs from my Inspiron 5584 after my service warranty expired - they were too buggy, consumed too much CPU and RAM, and the "system optimization" scans (Clean Files / Tune Performance / Optimize Network) were too aggressive and had the potential to do more harm than good.  For example, see my 12-Jul-2021 posts in ex-jedi's Prevent Automatic Recycle Bin Emptying about the over-aggressive registry cleaner included with the Tune Performance scan (now called Boost Performance in SupportAssist v4.x). When I still used SupportAssist v3.x I turned off all automatic background scanning at Settings | Scans and Optimizations (see the SupportAssist v4 User Guide <here>) and would only run "Update Software" and "Scan Hardware" tasks manually from the Home tab of SupportAssist to prevent any unexpected updates or unwanted changes to my system.
