XPS 15 9530 - BSOD CRITICAL_PROCESS_DIED caused by DellSupportAss / SupportAssist Remediation 5.5.16.0

System:
- Dell XPS 15 9530
- BIOS: 1.29.0
- Windows 11, ntkrnlmp.exe 10.0.26100.8328

Issue:
After Dell SupportAssist Remediation 5.5.16.0 and Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery Plugin for Dell Update 5.5.16.0 were installed/updated on 2026-05-08, the system started rebooting unexpectedly with BSOD.

Reliability Monitor and WER show:
- EventType: BlueScreen
- Bugcheck: 0xEF CRITICAL_PROCESS_DIED

WinDbg analysis of 051026-19078-01.dmp:

CRITICAL_PROCESS_DIED (ef)

Arg2: 0000000000000000
Arg3: ffffa4810316e080
Arg4: 0000000000000000

PROCESS_NAME: DellSupportAss
CRITICAL_PROCESS: DellSupportAss
FAILURE_BUCKET_ID:
0xEF_DellSupportAss_BUGCHECK_CRITICAL_PROCESS_fc1ea0c0_nt!PspCatchCriticalBreak

The process found on the system is:
C:\Program Files\Dell\SARemediation\agent\DellSupportAssistRemedationService.exe

Relevant services:
- Dell SupportAssist Remediation: Running, Automatic
- SupportAssistAgent: Running, Automatic
- DellTechHub: Running, Automatic

Installed Dell components:
- Dell SupportAssist Remediation 5.5.16.0, installed 2026-05-08
- Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery Plugin for Dell Update 5.5.16.0, installed 2026-05-08
- Dell SupportAssist 5.0.1.2516
- Dell Command | Update 5.7.0

Question:
Is this a new issue with Dell SupportAssist Remediation 5.5.16.0 / OS Recovery Plugin 5.5.16.0?
The previous workaround is dated 2020.  Is there an official workaround or fixed version?
For now, I disabled only “Dell SupportAssist Remediation” service and it seems working ( before  it restarted every 30 minutes).

Just so you all know, you only need to uninstall the Dell SupportAssist Remediation software. It is the root cause of the issue.

Hi All,

Thank you for your patience. For customers experiencing system errors related to the SupportAssist Remediation Service 5.5.16.0 update, here is the Knowledge Base article with instructions to update your system. If you have questions, please contact Dell GHN (Get Help Now) chat technical support Monday through Friday. Click the blue "Get Help Now" on the right to start a private live chat session. Share the private Service Tag with them so that they can verify the ownership and warranty status. This will also generate a unique Technical Support case for your unique Service Tag.

As many have noted, version 5.5.16.0 of the Dell SupportAssist Remediation service or Alienware SupportAssist Remediation service can cause the BSODs. This service operates independently of the primary Dell SupportAssist application. The workaround is to the uninstall Dell SupportAssist Remediation service 5.5.16.0 as per the above article.

To uninstall Dell SupportAssist Remediation version 5.5.16.0:

  1. Open Windows Settings and go to Apps, then Installed apps.
  2. Locate Dell SupportAssist Remediation version 5.5.16.0 or Alienware SupportAssist Remediation version 5.5.16.0 in the list.
  3. Select the application and then click Uninstall.
  4. Note that any system repair points created by Dell OS SupportAssist Recovery may not be available after uninstalling the Remediation Service
  5. If you keep the SupportAssist app or Dell Command Update, they will both scan and download the stable version of Dell SupportAssist Remediation. It will then automatically resume creating system repair points after installation.

If uninstalling Dell SupportAssist Remediation or Alienware SupportAssist Remediation version 5.5.16.0 does not resolve the issue, follow the standard blue screen troubleshooting at How to Troubleshoot Black Screen Errors, Blue Screen Errors, or Stop Code Errors on a Dell Computer.

Note: This issue has been resolved with a new release of SupportAssist. Please update to SupportAssist 5.1.1.

@Sygent  and @MartinHBS2026 ,

To determine if your computer Hardware is 100% functional (and you just have a software problem) I suggest you both:

a. Remove and/or uninstall all that Dell Support-Assist software (Windows-11 runs fine without it).

The minidump clearly points to one of the  supportAssist component being the culprit here. After uninstalling all SupportAssist components (i suspect the Dell SupportAssist Remediation being the cause here), the problem stopped! So its clearly software.  here is the full minidump output:

@MartinHBS2026

I completely agree with you.
First I checked that it wasn't a hardware issue, then I checked that new drivers had been installed, and finally I realized that the problem appeared after the latest Dell update. It triggered a reboot every 34 minutes.
After identifying the name of the responsible process with WinDbg, I first disabled the service for the next reboot with:
sc.exe config "Dell SupportAssist Remediation" start= disabled

And after restarting Windows, I had no more problems.

If that hadn't worked, I would have tried uninstalling 'Dell SupportAssist Remediation' and 'Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery Plugin for Dell Update', which were updated the same day the issue appeared.

@MartinHBS2026 ,

After uninstalling all SupportAssist components (i suspect the Dell SupportAssist Remediation being the cause here), the problem stopped!

So its clearly software.  here is the full minidump output:

Good work.

Thanks for this post. Same issue here after updating on Friday, laptop would reboot every 30 minutes, but I have a different laptop Dell Pro Plus 14. Uninstalled all Dell Support Assist apps and seems to be stable now.

@MartinHBS2026 Thanks for this post. I have exact symptoms and root cause. I uninstalled anything to do with support assist and I am back stable now.

@Waddo  The point is that, in this way, you dont receive new updates from DELL and no HW diagnostic.
I suggest to reinstall that Dell Assist suite and to disable only their SupportAssist Remediation service. They are two days everything is stable now.

Bye, bye

Can verify that this issue is present on Dell Pro 14 Premium as well.

DISM, SFC, ePSA, /forceit flash and in place repair done.
Let's just conclude that SupportASS is the issue here.

Proposed Solution - Remove all SupportAssist software installs from the affected machine. In our case, it was SupportAssist, SA Remediation, and SA OS Recovery. The cause was Dell Command prompting users to update over the last week and when they did, the computer began rebooting every 30 minutes or so. Removing these apps have restored functionality.

EDIT: Our affected machines are Dell Pro 14 Premiums as well @degasus

@bc_89

We simply deployed a script, stopping and disabling the 'Dell SupportAssist Remediation' service, until it has been fixed.

Less scorched earth, and effortless to undo.
