I got a T420 from some one. I have windows 8.1 installed on it right now but I'm trying to upgrade it to windows 10 however when I got to upgrade it I get a upgrade failed error. I believe it's because the BIOS is very old when i try to update the BIOS it tells me system services is disabled. Any clue which service it means? Thanks in advance.
A windows 8.1 isnt a supportet OS for your t420 and i have my doubt that the Dell DUPs works under your desktop OS.
Dell provides a ISO which contains a self booting Linux together with all FW updates and runs in a completely automatic manner. You can boot the ISO over the iDRAC or when burned to a DVD.
an you also reboot the server to BIOS and check whether Lifecycle controller and Collect System Inventory On Reboot is enabled under iDRAC Settings menu.
Windows 10 is not a supported operating system for T420. Not supported does not mean it will not work. We can not guarantee that it will work as it is not validated. You ay hit issues with driver and other compatibility. You can wait for any other community member who tried this configuration and share their experience.
I was able to install the bios update but I had to first update the LCC. I'm afraid that using Linux as the OS wont work for me I'm trying to install windows 10 on it to run a new game for my son, "New World". After updating the Lcc and the Bios i still cant update to windows 10.
I put in a dedicated gpu. I tried the game out on windows 8.1 but its just crashes no error after 5 minutes it closes it self out. I dont have a fresh windows 10 install.
Hi, As Shine posted earlier, you are using the OS for laptops and desktops for your server. I’m afraid we won’t be able to support it. Sorry we can’t be of help this time.

Hi, Dell has never official tested installing Win 10 on servers so I’m afraid I cannot provide any useful information for you. Sorry I can’t be of help this time. Wish you a good luck and a good day.
