Precision vs XPS for a mobile app development team — Android Studio + emulator workloads, thermal throttling concerns

Board: Laptops → Precision (ya XPS board)

Hi everyone, first post here.

I manage IT purchasing for a software development company (~200 developers), and we're refreshing laptops for our Android/iOS app development teams. Current shortlist is Precision 5690 vs XPS 16, and I'd appreciate real-world input before we commit to a 40-unit order.

Our workload profile: Android Studio with 2–3 emulator instances running simultaneously, Gradle builds on large projects (5–8 min full builds currently), Docker containers for backend services, and occasional Unity for AR features. Typical session keeps RAM at 28–30GB used.

Specific questions:

1. Sustained performance: On the Precision 5690 (Ultra 9 config) — does it hold clocks under 30+ minute continuous Gradle build + emulator sessions, or does thermal throttling kick in? Our current fleet (older XPS 15s) drops noticeably after ~15 minutes.
2. RAM config: For this workload, is 64GB justified over 32GB, or does the price delta better go toward faster storage?
3. Linux support: Some of our teams run Ubuntu 24.04. Any driver issues on the 5690 — especially Wi-Fi and sleep/resume?
4. Dock reliability: WD22TB4 with dual 27" monitors — stable on current firmware, or are the display-dropout threads I'm seeing still an active issue?
