We've just received a report citing a brand-new fix. Please give this a try, and then report back to us with your results, as we still have to study the effectiveness of this procedure:

# Please download & run FixVundo 1.3.1 [it MUST be this version (or later) for the fix to work] from

http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/FixVundo.exe

# Close all running programs (including your Internet Browser).

# Locate the file that you just downloaded.
# Double-click the FixVundo.exe file to start the removal tool.
# Click Start to begin the process, and then allow the tool to run.

Important: Do not launch any new applications while the tool is running!

# Restart the computer.
# Run the removal tool again to ensure that the system is clean.

Please post a new HJT log after you have finish

[if for any reason this "new" fix doesn't work for you, there are other approaches we can try]

Thank you very much for your help. This program worked very well, and my computer is now fine. The one and only drawback was how long it took (give or take 15 minutes), but of course, thats a very small price to pay.

Here is my new HJT report:

concerning that Vundo trojan, there's just a minor "remnant" of it [as well as of several other previous vundo trojans] still showing in your log:

run HJT.  place a check-mark in the box in front of each of the following lines:

O20 - Winlogon Notify: gebya - C:\WINDOWS\system32\gebya.dll (file missing)
O20 - Winlogon Notify: gebyx - C:\WINDOWS\
O20 - Winlogon Notify: geebx - C:\WINDOWS\
O20 - Winlogon Notify: geedd - C:\WINDOWS\
O20 - Winlogon Notify: jkhhi - C:\WINDOWS\

click on FIX CHECKED.  close HJT.  reboot.  then generate and post your updated log.

at that point, i'm gonna ask someone else to step-in, to determine additional problems (if any) that you might have.

Log is clean.

Ron

Make sure you have System Restore running (toggle it off and On today to get rid of any bad stuff it may have retained)
and then you can just go back to an earlier time if you hit a bad site.
One way to make this more obvious is to check everything in your current HijackThis and Add to Ignore List then set up Hijackthis to run at boot and to show you if it finds anything new.

To avoid going to a bad site you might want to install IE-SpyAd and SpywareBlaster and make the other changes recommended at:.
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/restricted.htm
I used to recommend Spybot's Immunize system but have recently learned it is not as good as the one at:
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm
Never hurts to do one of the free on line scans from Panda or Trend.  They take a while but are pretty good.

In addition to Microsoft AntiSpy

I like to run Spybot S&D.

Also like to run AdAware once in a while.

I've had this virus for over a week.  I tried everything--even called Symantec who said to call Dell--but when I found this thread I followed your instructions and it worked like a charm!  I'm sending the HJT log.  Maybe you can suggest what I should do in order to prevent this in the future?  Thanks, again.

grey:

glad to hear things " worked like a charm" for you.  however:

1) you've posted this result in a 5-week old thread!!!    there was no guarantee that anyone would even be following this thread anymore.   fortunately, i still got a notice about it...

2) in general, due to the highly complex and individualized needs of HiJackThis analysis, we only work with one person's log/problems per thread.   so when you send your HJT log to us, please start a new thread of your own.  And please be sure to follow-through with this, as the VBG log did not give us enough information to diagnose anything further.

3) you indicated following the instructions in this thread... which (at the time) were to run FixVundo.   I trust that you also located information in another thread, which had you run VirtumundoBeGone (which I can tell from the log you've included).

4) as for preventing this particular infection, it's rather difficult, as WinFixer is using deceptive & unethical (dare we say, "illegal") means to spread itself.  for a safe-to-view list of some known/alleged sites distributing WinFixer, see here:

i see you just posted your HJT log, as requested, in the HJT forum.

at present, i'm "specializing" only in certain types of infections, like WinFixer and NAIL, so i'm not in a position to analyze the remainder of your log... you'll have to wait for someone else to do that.

But i can confirm that Virtumundo trojan does not appear in it.
