Dell's assistance on downgrade to XP professional
I purchased a 9400/E1705 in March 07 with Vista Ultimate. At that time I had no choice but to have Vista pre-installed. To be honest I loved it at first but always felt my lap-top should have been much faster for the money I spent. So now I've about had it with Vista and want to downgrade to XP pro. Does anyone know if Dell will provide me with XP? Also I've been reading that at some point (probably after I bought mine) Dell was including the right to downgrade when Vista was sold. I have a feeling I will have to buy a new copy of XP but obviously I want to avoid that if I can. Thank you for any responses.

Dell will not provide you with a downgrade disk of XP so you will have to purchase one yourself. Even if you are still under warranty if you do change your OS you will lose your dell support.
the good news is that Dell does list the required software and drivers for your system on XP HERE

Since Vista Ultimate does allow a downgrade to XP Pro, you could legally use any Dell XP Pro Reinstall CD on your Vista machine.

So.... If you (or a friend who wold copy / lend it) have the Dell Windows XP Pro reinstall disk, you could legally use that to downgrade your machine.
Note... As Dave said... If any support is required, Dell can (and may) require you to reinstall Vista.

My wife has a copy of XP pro, but she currently uses that on her Dell lap top. Will that one work?

Yes her Dell disk will work to install XP on your system
