I keep getting the same error message, can someone please help?

Dell Dimension 9100
Windows XP SP2
1 GB ram
250GB HD
DVD rom
DVD RW
Floppy drive
IE 7

Can someone please help me figure this out? When I am in Windows and the computer is running fine, I will get the error message "An Unexpected Error has caused Windows to shut down, you will lose all of your data" and then Windows will stay but the program will terminate. I usually click on Don't Send when it asks me if I want to send an error report to Microsoft. I thought it was my Norton Internet Security anti virus program, so I straightened that out by deleting it, rebooting the computer, making sure there were no files left on the pc, and then reinstalling the program. But that didn't seem to do the trick. Also, sometimes when I try to log off the computer, I'll get the message that the program is not responding, and I'll have to do CTRL ALT DEL. The box comes up as ccAPP.exe. I'm pretty sure that is Norton. Can somebody please tell me what to do, or do I need to do a complete reinstall of Windows? I always keep the computer updated with the latest Windows updates. I also keep my programs updated. This is beginning to be a real hassle. Is there someone out there that knows what to do? I have  had this computer for 2 years now. The hard drive was replaced once. I ran a diagnostics on the HD and it passed. It's a Western Digital. I'm tired of fighting with this computer.

robinhood42,

1.  Is there a specific program which ou are using when you get this error message?

2.  Please post more info about the error message.  Check the details on the message and post that information here.

3.  CCAPP.EXE is part of the Norton Anti-Virus program.

That's the problem. I'm not using any specific program when I get this error message. I can either be online or just using any type of program when I'll get this message. I can't pinpoint it down. The computer will be running good and that message will just pop up. I do remember having a problem with Norton AV last week. It wouldn't download the live updates. I ended up uninstalling the program and then reinstalling it, but I was getting this message before that. I do know that there are a lot of orphan files and junk in the registry, but since I don't exactly know what program goes to what, I don't want to start deleting programs in the registry and making things worse. When I was having the problem with Norton, they were aware of it because I found a webpage that mentioned the problem that I was having. Norton had an Autofix tool that I used, which really didn't fix anything. Un and re-installing the program was the only thing that straightened it out. The error message is never really specific. It just says Windows experienced an unexpected error and had to close, closing the program I was using at the same time.

robinhood42,

Unfortunately, there is not enough information to offer you any good ideas as to the cause of this problem.

However, one indicator in your recent post, the statement that you were unable to download NAV updates, points to a possible virus/trojan infection.  There are a number of viruses which target Norton products and either disable them or prevent them from doing updates.  You can do an online virus scan and clean using Trend's Housecall service which can be accessed at this link:

In addition, you should consider downloading and running some good anti-spyware software.  Frequently mentioned on these forums are Adaware from Lavasoft and Spybot Search&Destroy from PepiMK software.  Both of these are free to get, free to update, and free to use.  They can be downloaded from www.download.com.  Get them, update them, run them and let them delete anything that they find.

Steve,
I ran that program and it found nothing. No viruses, nothing. I also use Spybot and Adaware. I used to use Webroot's Spysweeper but it never got along with Norton, so I ended up deleting the program. If someone should know what causes this error message, would you please tell me? Last think I want to do right now is reformat the hard drive.

Thanks for trying to help.

Robin

P.S. Norton is working good now and I keep it up to date

robinhood42,

When you get the error message that Windows needs to shut down, please click the "Details" button and post the contents of the error message here.

hello robinhood42
i think that the problem possibly lies with norton itself im not definatly sure but my mate had simular problems with unexpected errors happening out of the blue after he removed norton and updated to a newer version .but i don't know if you tried this but here goes. first download the norton product removal tool from here http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039  pick the correct one you are using at the moment. and download an earlier version that you did use as well to make sure the removal of older norton files are removed as well. when they are downloaded disconnect from the net and uninstall norton. when it is uninstalled restart pc then use the norton removal tool for the older norton you may have used before and the norton you are using now. try both. hope it helps
