Low virtual memory

My computer has warned me of low virtual memory on my task bar. I do not know much about this topic. I would rather not reconfigure it any way, since I'm not that sure of my own computer literacy. I do not want to harm my computer in any way. Please help! Thank you for any advice!

In response to what you were saying about having photo shop open AND internet explorer, sometimes I find that this happens if I am viewing several webpages, viewing my email, viewing music folders and maybe other stuff ALL at the same time. It sounds like maybe that is just the way it is. I mean if you have 906 RAM and I have only 128 now, what difference is it going to make if I go and buy all that RAM you know. It doesn't really bother me when that low virtual memory comes up anymore after being in this chat because I know that my computer is fast enough for me and as long as my computer is not being harmed, I feel better after reading everyone's posts about this issue. What I mean is, I'm not going to freak out and go buy RAM to fix it. Someday though I may buy it just so my system runs faster, but I have a feeling that I will get that error no matter how much RAM I put in. If you think of anything, let me know.

Thanks,

Catherine

The problems may be related. Have you scanned the system for spyware/malware, using the steps listed in this post?

Catherine,

See Chris's article for directions. But if you've already carried out all the steps, including posting a copy of the HijackThis log for analysis, the problem lies elsewhere.

The reason I suggested spyware/malware as a possible source is that others have reported that problems with excessive resource consumption by svchost.exe are a result of spyware/malware.

(edit) The suggestion was primarily a reply to "SirPenguin"'s post.

This is for all you since you are getting the error/bubble [!]:
"Windows Virtual Memory Minimum Too Low"
"Your system is low on Virtual Memory. Windows is increasing the size of your virtual memory paging file. During this process, memory requests for some applications may be denied. For information see help."

Tonite I talked with Dell about this issue [their Lifetime Support Line is 1-866-209-3251] and they gave me a really top notch suggesion for my Dell Dimension Desktop 4550. This is for people that have a Pentium 4 Desktop with Windows XP.
Anyway, here are the steps you need to take to correct the problem:
Right click on "My Computer"
Select "Properties" at the bottom
Next select the "Advanced" tab
Next you will see 3 boxes. The first is titled 'Performance.' Choose "Settings"
Now on this new window click the "Advanced" tab
Under the title 'Virtual Memory' click the "Change" button
Now you will see the title "Customize Size," put a dot inside the circle
Now you are ready to change your "Paging File"
Click "Customize Size"
Your settings should be the following:
Initial Size (MB):        512
Maximum Size (MB):   1024
Next click on "Set"
Click ok on this box
Next box click apply, ok
Next box click ok
Click to Restart your computer.
You are finished.
If you have any problems with these instructions please contact DELL @ 1-866-209-3251
let me know if this helps.
HAVE A GREAT DAY!
