No Internet Connection After Sleep, And No Power Management Tab

I am having the issue where my computer loses internet access after sleep or other periods of inactivity. The WiFi is still connected, but I can't connect unless I turn off (not restart) my computer and turn it back on.

The standard response (see below) involves the Power Management tab in Network Adapters, but I do not have this. I have: General / Advanced / Driver / Details / Events  / Resources.

Is there any option or way to make this fix?

@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

Using Device Manager

1. Press Windows Key + R and type devmgmt.msc in the Run dialog box to open Device Manager.

2. In the Device Manager window, expand Network Adapters and look for your WiFi driver, do a right click on it, select Properties.

3. In the property sheet, switch to Power Management tab and uncheck the option Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power. Click OK.

You may now close Device Manager and restart the machine to get your issue fixed

Systems which have modern standby do not have power management tabs on the Wi-Fi device.  Since I don't know what system you have I can't help much more than that.

If you want to know if yours has modern standby, open an admin command prompt and type powercfg /a and see if the listing shows S3 sleep not available.

Hello,

I have that very same problem and am also looking for the power management to disable sleep for the Wifi card.

I have a thread here which is in German, but nobody has offered any solution:

https://www.dell.com/community/Inspiron/Wireless-AC-9560-funktioniert-auf-meinem-Inspiron-7586-2-in-1/td-p/7278615

I have asked Dell support to check the Wifi and see what they could do, but they would not even acknowledge that there seems to be a wide base of people who are reporting the wake-up Wifi gone problem and that there seems to be something wrong with Windows 10 driver and power management.

Anyway, the quick but temporary fix is to open up your BIOS and hit "factory reset". But the effect only lasts a day or two and then the issue reappears. I am quite fed up about this. If anyone has a solution, please share.

My system is Windows 10 home on an Inspiron 7586 2-1 with an Intel Wireless AC 9560 (and yes, I have installed the newest drivers)

Oh and just to share:

The problem  described in this thread sounds similar, so I am currently trying the solution suggested there (disabling Windows Auto Driver updates).

If it works, I will let you know:

@minsche  - Open Device Manager and double-click the WiFi entry. Assuming you see a Power Management tab, click it and uncheck the box "Allow PC to turn off...". Exit Device Manager.

Now open the Windows Power options screen. Identify the active Power plan and click the link to change settings. On next screen, click link for Additional Options. And on that screen:

  • Set WiFi to Max Performance
  • Disable Hibernation
  • Disable Hybrid Sleep
  • Disable PCI Express Link State Management

Save the changes to the Power plan and reboot. Does that help?

Hello @RoHe,

Thanks for taking the time to answer.

Unfortunately, just like the thread says, I do not have a Power Management Tab on my Dell.

Also, there are no options to disable Hibernate, Hybrid Sleep or PCI Express nor can I set WiFi to Max Performance. The only thing I have tried now, is to set the "go to Hibernate after...minutes" to 99999999.

Let's see, what happens.

Thanks

Don't know where you're looking, but EVERY PC running Windows 10 has Power Management tabs and Power Options.

Open Device Manager and expand list under USB.

Double-click the entry for a USB root hub to see this:

USB.jpg

Click Power Management tab and uncheck box "Allow PC to turn off...". Repeat for all root hubs.

Now expand list under Human Interface Devices in Device Manager and double-click each entry. Uncheck that same box on those that have a Power Management tab. Then do the same for your WiFi card. Then exit Device Manager.

Now right-click Start and on Search line, type in: Power and select Power & Sleep button at top of search results to see this:

Click Additional power settings to see this:

Identify the active plan and click Change plan settings to see this:

Click Change advanced power settings to see this on left side of next screen:

Options.jpg

Now make all the changes I recommended on this screen. (Be sure to scroll down to see all of them.)  When you've made the changes, save the Power plan and reboot.

Hello @RoHe

First of all: THANK YOU SO MUCH for trying so hard to help.

Now, let's get to your suggestions.

First of all, I have now followed your advice concerning the USB Root Hub and the Human Interface Devices.

Indeed, in those parts I actually can find the Power Management settings. I have switched it to "Computer cant turn off" whenever possible.

Unfortunately, I could not follow your advice for the Wifi card, since I do not have a Power Management tab in any of the listed devices.

What am I doing wrong? It would love to change the Power settings of that WiFi card, let me tell you that, but I can only go into the Advanced Tab and then I get lots of options I have no idea about (unfortunately, in German here)

Next, when I go into Power Options, I also seem to be lacking the options you mention.

As I said, I am already very grateful, so if you have any further advice, that would be wonderful.

Thank you

Well, you have a laptop which may be part of the reason you don't have all the power settings options available. And you have an EU (German) version of Windows Home. The settings I indicated are available to me in a US version of Win 10 Pro on my desktop. And there have been reports that things like Hybrid Sleep disappeared after some Windows updates so read this.

At least set hibernation to Never.

Right-click Start and on the Search line enter: CMD. When Command Prompt appears at the top of the list, right-click it and Run as administrator. When you get to the CMD prompt, type in: sfc /scannow  (include the space) and press Enter. Follow the prompts to run  sfc (it can take a while!). Then reboot and see if any of those power options appear.

And if all else fails, maybe you need to reinstall Windows, but I can't promise that will help.

@RoHe

Thanks again for your help.

I followed all your advice and having eliminated everything else decided to contact Dell for a new Wifi card.

They sent it over and I put it in two days ago.

So far, I have not had a single glitch Keep your fingers crossed that all it was, was a faulty card

Not every PC has it. Can you edit your post to reflect this as you are apparently an expert member? Some PV i7 based for example do not have it because those chip do not support S3 mode and therefore there is no power management tab. Now the question is why?

Doesn't work. I just did it. Still no power tab. Yep. I've been adding registry Dwords, doing all the tutorials and NOTHING WORKS.

Dell is the worst company I've ever seen to disable functions on laptop that customers own out right.

Dell's configuration seems to stop any of the fixes I found online so the whole "german vs US pro version" is just an excuse and cop out.

Infuriating.
