Software (Windows Installer?) not functional

Heya,

I used an old 'Pagis 2.0' Installation-CD that worked on my previous Win98, hoping that it would fix the scanner on my new Win2000. Now I know that it doesnt support W2K with no more technical support from scansoft.com neither.

The problem is, it has now corrupted my Windows Installer. Applications are luckily still all running until now, but they aren't listed as installed programs under Software in the Control Pannel (only symbols on the left!)

I tried to reinstall the Windows Installer 2.0 (instmsiw.exe), but when I want to reinstall it I get an error that it already exists. Should I even remove it? Under cmd I did the msiexec /unregister and /regserver and restarted the PC. I also reinstalled the Windows Script 5.6, but those didnt help.

Could anyone please help me on how to get my Software directory straight again??

... and maybe not? Any other suggestions?

Dell Support once informed me before about Norton Antivirus 2003 not reparable and having to reformat, but the solution got solved aswell (manual deinstallation, removal of registry keys, reinstallation of Windows Script 5.6)

Thanks anyhow.....

OK, the solution is:

Start Button, Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Computer Management... inside of Comp. Mgt., look down LEFT-HAND side of the tree of items: Click on & hi-lite the SERVICES and APPLICATIONS item. Then, click & hilite the Services item.

Then, in the RIGHT-HAND side pane, once SERVICES is hi-lited from clicking in the left-hand side tree of items, see the "Windows Installer" service, be sure it is started.

I apologize for ignoring SUBJECT CLOSED, but I couldn't find advice close to what I was looking for elsewhere.  I followed your advice, and I did need to click Start, but when I did that, I got the following "Services" dialog box . . . Could not start the Windows Installer service on Local Computer.  Error 3:  the system can not find the path specified.  The path is pretty weirdly named.  I don't what to post it on a public forum and just give away info about my computer.  Is WHInstall by any chance the problem.  This is the only file I found in Recycle bin that looked curious (I deleted this a while ago believing it to be spyware).
