Upgrade to Premium - eBay Debacle ?

:smileyindifferent:

Why do I do this to myself ?!?!?  Recently purchased a new Inspiron 6400 w/Vista Home Basic.  Since I would like to Network my system for Media purposes....I wanted to add Vista Premium.  So being a Cheap-Skate (i.e: Needed to save a few bucks) - I purchased some Dell Upgrade disks to Vista Premium from a Guy on eBay.  Sealed in the Dell package.

Only issue is that once I received the Disks....there are (2) of them.  One is Beige in color (and it reads at the top of the disk "WinXP Media Ctr to Vista Premium Upgrade!).  The auction didnt spell this out.  My Bad for not asking.

So, million $ question.

Can I use these Disks to upgrade to VistaP on my Vista Home Basic system ???  It would seem the answer is obvious...but hoping somebody might know the Ins/Outs of Upgrading to Premium.  Any HELP on this is GREATLY Appreciated !!!!

Thanks, Dan.

Hi, thanks for the response.  Package is Sealed from Dell (not opened).  I did not try to install them in case I need to return the package to the Seller.

I wouldnt say any of this transaction is breaking any software laws.....

I do not think that's so legal, or allowed. But let me know, did you tried already the DVD upgrade DVD...??? Any other error message...???

And what about the second DVD... what it says Windows Anytime Upgrade or so??? YOu could upgrade from Basic to Home Premium, without buying those DVDs thru eBay... The guy who sold you, maybe already used and burned it...

You can try it will be actually  interesting know if that work, but if it doesn't work, you may need to go to microsoft website and get the upgrade from them.

Check the website

The dell express upgrade disk will work.
I bought the same disk from an individual on ebay and did a clean install on a formated hard drive. I just booted from the DVD did a custom install. installed all drivers, and updates and then activated.
worked like a charm. I think the dell express upgrade is the same DVD as the upgrade dvd you buy from microsoft with dell branding on the dvd.

Hi, thanks for taking the time to reply.  What I  want to know is if I can use it just to upgrade and not do a clean install...or did you tell me that already.

Please let me know, Thanks

Yes you will be able to perform a clean install with the disc as well as a clean install. Clean install is the way to go.

yes i am sure you can do an upgrade from vista home basic, like i stated i believe this is the same as the microsoft DVD but with dell branding on the disk itself. as long as you have the unused key that came with the DVD it should work just fine. Just as a retail upgrade DVD would

OK - you've got me confused. You stated originally that you wanted to upgrade Vista, and now you ask " did you mean I could do a Upgrade and/or Clean install using the WinXP Media Ctr disk". What are you trying to do - upgrade Vista or insall XP?????

Thats what the Upgrade Assistant (Blue Disc) was made for to make it easier for the user to upgrade to Vista.

Yer put a message up after you have completed the Install let us know how it went.

Good Luck

Sorry, see my original post for pertinent info...to recap.  I received WinXP Media Ctr 2005 to Vista Premium Dell install Disks.

I am currently running Vista Home Basic (orig OS).

My question: Can I use these to upgrade to Vista Premium or should I just resell on eBay ???

thx

First use the blue Upgrade Assistant which prepares and updates your system and gets it ready to upgrade to Vista. After that use the Vista OS disc to do a clean install.

Do this:
  1. Go to Device Manager
  2. Click on the plus + next to Sound, video and game controllers
  3. Right click on SigmaTel High Definition Audio CODEC click update driver...
  4. Click on Browse my computer for driver software
  5. Click Let me pick from a list of device on my computer
  6. You should get a list with probably more than one option, select the High Definition Audio Device
  7. Go Next, then click on YES, and follow instructions until you finish.
  8. Restart the omputer
