XP Won't Re-Activate After Upgrade
For some reason the DHCP service stopped working. So I proceeded to "Upgrade" the XP Home, hoping it will reinstall anything that's missing. After that I can't get into XP at all because it has to be activated. Apparently the upgrade didn't fix the DHCP problem, and XP couldn't be activated. What should I do now? I am willing to do a re-install but there are some data on the machine that I would like to save. Anyway I can boot from the CD and copy the files out from the hard drive?

See if NTFS Reader for DOS can assist you in saving your data.
What do you mean by "upgrade the XP Home?" Normal procedures performed on a system which is activated will not deactivate XP.

Denny,
By "upgrade XP Home" I meant booting from CD-ROM with the Windows XP CD (the one that came with the Dell machine) in it. And then when asked to "reinstall" or "upgrade" I chose "upgrade". I didn't expect to have to activate either but... Anyway I can activate by calling Microsoft's activation number? It didn't give me that option though. :(

Due to various crashes, blue screens, memory dumps, and automatic shutdowns, Dell Support is recommending that I do the same thing, i.e. "repair" XP by "upgrading" it from the installation CD. They recommend I use Method 1 in the MS Knowledge-Base Article 315341. After hearing of your problem I am afraid to do this without some more advice from members of this forum. Dell advises the only files/information I will lose are those in the Shared Documents Folder under "all users". Any comments, anyone?
