XPS 8700, can I install this driver?
Hello,
I would like to install this driver: https://www.dell.com/support/home/fr-fr/drivers/driversdetails?driverid=cr5pj
to update my motherboard, model 0KWVT8 (version A03), on my XPS8700.
When I enter my serial number in the wizard, this driver doesn’t appear, but it does show up in the general list of drivers for the XPS8700.
Can I use this driver without risking damage to my PC?
A Windows update must have accidentally overwritten the drivers for the “SM Bus Controller,” as they are now missing (indicated by a small yellow triangle in Device Manager), and this may be causing a bug that crashes my PC either at startup or a few seconds after the desktop appears and loads.

Yes, it's safe for you to install that Intel 8 Chipset driver. It was designed for Dell XPS 8700 systems.

If you are running Windows 10 Os typically auto installs appropriate driver including chipset driver. There is no need for user to manually Dl install such driver from Dell support. In my experience the sm bus driver relates to chipset has no noticeable effect on running pc or stability. I only install the chipset driver if I am ocd about how clean my dev mgr should look like ie nothing missing.
if your pc is not working well consider a clean install of Windows 10. If you are running Windows 11, same thing as it will also auto install all needed drivers

I'm running Windows 10.
I tried updating the driver through Device Manager, but Windows couldn't find it. I was then advised to do it manually through the manufacturer's website.
As for the problem I’m having (the PC completely freezes except in Safe Mode), I’ve tried several “non-critical” solutions (completely uninstalling the graphics drivers and reinstalling the latest updates, making a few settings changes, etc.), but so far nothing has changed. So I’m just feeling my way through it. As a last resort, I’ll try reinstalling (or repairing first).

Chino beats me as when I was replying I did not know he was too.
i doubt this piecemeal software repair will fix the freeze issue. But op should try replace CMOs battery a new battery then clear CMOs via motherboard jumper. This is good maintenance for old desktop pc.

Since none of my little “non-critical” tweaks worked, I finally backed up all my important files and folders and reset the PC (reset time: 7 hours 🥲...including 2.5 hours stuck at 80%... I almost shut down the PC at that point, but I gave myself 3 hours before considering that; after 2.5 hours, it went from 80% to 83%, so I didn’t touch anything else and let the PC do its thing lol)
No more freezing issues, but still the “Bus Controller” with a missing driver. So I installed the chipset driver—which is why I created this post—and everything is fine now. No more freezing, and everything is back to normal in Device Manager!
