XPS 8910 and the nightmare of June 2026 secure boot update

AFAIK, you are one of the first to report on a XPS-8910.

I suggest you do this and post an image of your report here in this thread so we can see all the moving pieces.

I tried running sfc /scannow. The system froze before it completed, and I somehow ended up triggering a secure boot violation on reboot.

Yikes. 

Hopefully, this computer DOES NOT have Support-Assist or Remediation Client nonsense installed.

It is suggested that you run proper DISM command before SFC. Once you get good DISM, then you can try SFC.

Be sure your C-Drive SSD's SMART-status is good (SSD not failing).

I report when I do secure boot update in power shell command on a XPS 8700, it freezes mouse each time.  I have to hard shut down the pc.  this freeze is reproducible.

Thank you everyone. At this point I care more about the computer working than secure boot being up to date. So, I think I am going to leave things alone.

But it really that Dell does not support computers that are still working perfectly fine, even under Windows 11!

I have owned an 8700 for at least a decade!

Several years ago, I noticed that it froze up a couple of minutes after booting up (or waking from sleep).

But the freeze only lasts a minute or so...then everything works.

I'm going to have to investigate this 'fix' for my 8700.

More than one hour after turning off 'Secure Boot', my wife's trusty 8910 seems happy (no freezes).

And my wife seems happy, too.

My fingers remain crossed...and hope that all is well tomorrow morning.

@josephandrews222​ If you have completely turned off Secure Boot in the BIOS, rather than doing so, try simply disabling the Microsoft\Windows\PI\Secure-Boot-Update task in the Task Scheduler.

It's pretty incredible that Microsoft pushed an update that for practical purpose essentially bricks all the Dell XPS 8910. We have a lot of (aging) XPS in our household: a XPS 8700 running Windows 10, a XPS 8910 running Windows 10 until this past weekend and a XPS 8930 running Windows 11. For us, only the XPS 8910 started to freeze like that. I literally spent my entire weekend (Saturday & Sunday) troubleshooting the problem on the XPS 8910.

To be honest Mr. Google will have to help me to learn about the Task Scheduler.

Just for fun, perhaps I'll get my first XPS desktop (XPS 420!?) out of storage and see if it still works.

Not for fun...my wife's XPS 8910 and Windows Updates has always been a little bit odd.

I have turned off all automatic updates for all of our Windows boxes. For the XPS 8910, I always know that an update to Windows is available because the computer refuses to go into automatic sleep until after the update has been applied.

But to be clear: Susan's 8910 now works the morning after I turned off Secure Boot in the BIOS. Now onto the Task Scheduler...

...after turning back on Secure Boot in the BIOS, I have now successfully disabled the Secure Boot Update task in the Task Scheduler for my wife's 8910.

One hour later: no freezes.

...I am going to try this on my 8700.

It had been a few days since my 8700 had been fired up.

When I got to it this morning, there were updates waiting to be installed.

Prior to their installation, I applied the two steps described in the link above (the second of which is a regedit).

Both were uneventful and I was asked to restart (I think). I did so, knowing that the Windows updates would install (hopefully minus the offending update).

Interestingly, after the restart, I was asked if I wanted to modify the regedit. I said no...

An hour or so later, no freezes...I'm writing this on the 8700.
