XPS 8930, no DELL logo on startup

XPS 8930

XPS 8930

Full Disclosure: I currently have a Support Issue with Dell that has now been escalated. At this point I am just wondering if this has happened or is happening to other Dell XPS 8930 (or similar) desktop users.

For several weeks now, when starting the computer, the computer opens up on the "Sign-in" page, where I have to enter my security pin. The system goes directly to this Windows Welcome screen without showing the Dell logo at all. In all other respects, the computer is behaving normally.

Does anyone else have this issue?

So far, it has been recommended that I disable the "Fast Boot" option. I have disabled it, but the result is the same: no Dell logo, which would give me an opportunity to press the F2 or F12 (BIOS) keys or any other function keys that go into the system to make changes when/if necessary.

@RoHe -- You and @ispaltenwin the prize!! I moved my monitor (Dell S2718D) cable from the HDMI cable on the top back section of the CPU (which I assume is the "built-in Intel HD one") to the discrete graphics card (nvidia geforce gtx 1070 with 8gb gddr5 graphics memory). Then everything fell into place.

Now I am getting a normal startup with the Dell Logo and the ability to press F2/F12 and obtain the expected response.

Thanks so much for your help, guys!

Unplug AC power, press and hold power button for 30 seconds.  Reconnect AC power and test again.  Other method is connecting the monitor to an integrated video port.

If the issue is persisted, perform a CMOS reset and replacing with a fresh, new coin cell battery.

Wondering, did you make a BIOS change with respect to Multi-Display?

I have not tried looking at the 8930 BIOS settings, but there is one in the 8940 for that. I think with that off, AND you have 2 video adapters (the Intel HD one and a Discrete one) it depends where the monitor is plugged into. With it in the Discrete card that would show the Windows startup prompt, but the Intel HD would show the BIOS?

Just a guess on my part, but if you are not connected to the Intel HD port, try that one.

RMG2635,

If you start tapping F2 or F12 immediately after telling Windows to restart or from a powered off state, you should see the BIOS.

@RMG2635 - Version of Windows?

Did you disable Fast Boot in BIOS setup or Fast Startup in Windows?  Big difference...

FWIW, I'm not having this issue with my XPS 8930:

Core i7-9700

16 GB RAM

Dell OEM 512 GB  NVME SSD

Dell OEM NVidia 1660 Ti GPU

Video connected DP(GPU)>DP(monitor)

Win 10 22H2

Fast Startup enabled in Windows

@RoHe -- Thanks for your response. When I went to change the Fast Startup setting the box was unchecked, meaning Fast Sartup was already disabled. So I enabled Fast Startup, selected Apply/OK, then shut down the PC. Still no DELL logo. Then I went back into the power settings and DISABLED Fast Startup. The results were the same. There was no effect and I still can't get the DELL logo. But in all other respects the PC is working fine.

I may have to resort to a reset of the system. I'm loathe to do that, but in the final analysis, it may be my only choice.

@DELL-Chris M -- Thanks for your answer. Unfortunately, I have been doing that and F2/F12 keys will not bring up the DELL logo, either on restart or from a "cold reboot," by that I mean shutting down the PC and then turning it back on with the on/off button on the CPU.

I think I'll have to resort to a reset of the system, which pains me because I have a number of apps I will have to re-install.

Just an observation. I have seen in the Dell XPS 8930 service manual just says to press the F2 or the F12 key as soon as the logo appears. The "keep tapping" the key works, but so does pressing the appropriate function key as soon as the logo comes up works just as well. On my Dell Inspiron 17 3793 laptop I only have to depress the F2 or F12 key once when the Logo appears to get the appropriate system setup or boot menu.

Thanks, everyone for your quick response. I think I will resort to resetting the PC and then reinstalling any necessary apps like Quicken, PowerChute, TurboTax, etc., which is annoying, but which I will be able to reinstate after the reset.

Not sure resetting/reinstalling will solve this problem because it's all happening before Windows loads.

Is Fast Boot disabled in BIOS setup?

Does your PC have an add-in video card or only onboard Intel Graphics?  Which type video port are you using on PC and which type on the monitor? If you have an add-in video card, the monitor should be connected to that card, not to either of the onboard Intel Graphics ports.

Are you powering the monitor on a few sec before powering PC on?

EDIT: Are you using a wired or wireless keyboard? Is it plugged into a rear USB2 port on XPS 8930? If wireless, try a wired keyboard in a rear USB2 port.

@RMG2635

Hmm, very odd occurrence? Normally a power on would prod the BIOS to load, set up the h/w and then branch to the Boot Loader of the OS. As the BIOS was loading, IT would display the Logo, but that it seems is NOT happening for you?

I wonder if your PC is actually Sleeping, not shut down? That would by-pass the BIOS load.

What happens if you use a USB flash drive, same Windows Media Creation Tool via the Settings SYSTEM -> RECOVERY -> ADVANCED STARTUP with the Tool in a USB slot? Does that show the Logo?
