XPS 8940 - Are there any known safeguard holds or other issues that would prevent an update to Win 11 24H2?

XPS 8940
11th Gen Intel Core i7 - 11700
515GB NVme C: with 267GB Free
2TB EVO 870 Internal SSD
Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060Ti 8GB
RAM 32GB

I have searched widely for any known safeguard holds and verified that none of them apply to my system. All the current updates from Dell and Microsoft are installed. I have checked the registry for any holds. Run wureset.bat and any other suggested fix I could fin but still no update from Microsoft.

Have others successfully updated to 24H2 without problems?

Has Dell issued and information regarding the XPS 8940 not updating?

Should I attempt to do a manual upgrade or just keep waiting?

Thanks for any help or ideas.

    My 8940 is on 24H2.

    What are you on NOW? Run WINVER from a CMD prompt to see.

    What is the EXACT error you get? Windows Update should show you the error. Under UPDATE HISTORY, or run the Reliability Viewer, each would show the error for the fail.

    If you GOOGLE "windows update 24h2 will not install" you will find that this has happened to others. There are MANY reasons why it wouldn't, so I suggest you check some of those web pages. Also, one here, https://www.dell.com/community/en/conversations/xps/unable-to-install-windows-11-version-24h2-update/673fe0f8b0cc6c23633484ee but I wouldn't put too much weight on it, different situation, and not at all clear it is the same as you have, unless you are at 23h2 now.

    Quite possible something else, but you can rule out space on C: as the problem.

    @ispalten I'm on version 23H2 OS Build 22631.5768.

    I haven't gotten an error because I have not tried a manual upgrade and was waiting for the update to be offered in Windows update. I wanted to avoid the issues that many have encounter with a manual upgrade and also wanted to avoid, if possible, a clean install.

    Only one release, as 24H1 was never released.

    Windows 11 version 24H2, also known as the Windows 11 2024 Update, was released on October 1, 2024. It was initially available for Copilot+ PCs, with a broader rollout to all eligible devices beginning on that date. The update is available through Windows Update and other deployment methods for businesses. 24H2 was first released to Copilot+ PCs on June 15, 2024.

    So you should have seen it in Windows Update last year, check the Windows Update Feature Updates. and mine was successfully installed on ‎11/‎22/‎2024.

    I do have Co-Pilot active too.

    This web page might help you, https://www.windowslatest.com/2024/10/01/how-to-install-windows-11-24h2-now-available-for-everyone/ but I am NOT sure if it will UPDATE to 24H2 or do a 'clean Install' as there are more than one way to do it?

    I'd Google that to find out for sure? I have never had to use it.

    I wonder if it was an OPTIONAL UPDATE at some point? Check there too.

    Only other possibility is that some 'file or drive' is stopping it from being offered?

    Might want to go to MS Forum and ask there how to get it?

    @ispalten Thanks for the help and especially the link to the "How to Install Windows" page. I used the Installation Assistant and everything work with no problems or errors. It took almost 45 minutes to complete and after rebooting there were two long pauses at 36% and 90%. Advice to others: Be Patient.

    For those who have not received the update to 24H2. You might consider ispalten's advice and use the link in his previous post.

    @gaknak

    Glad it worked out for you. Good to know the Installation Assistant did not do a new clean install, but just the Update.

    Still a mystery why you were never offered it or saw it?
