XPS 8940, BIOS update, install or not?

XPS 8940

XPS 8940

Hi there

I have difficulty to define where the problem lies and if I should update my Bios or not.

I have a XPS8940 and Support Assistant and Support | Dell France with tags service doesn't find any "new" bios update.

However, via this link, using the service tag and os, a newer version is supposedly available.

Which tool should I trust ? Is there any known issue with Support Assistant failing to find newer versions ?

Thanks for your help

@Chino de Oro

Windows Update ONLY works for drivers the VENDOR packages up and provides to them. Mostly ones they think are Critical. It has been a LONG time since my XPS8940 were even offered a BIOS update. Also, if the BIOS is set not to allow Capsule Updates, in many cases you do not get them.

So, I run Dell Update and see this:

No BIOS and the last one is NOT for the Intel on-board video on the 8940. It will FAIL to load with the wrong device as the reason.

So I now go to the US Support page and have it run Support Assist:

It ONLY finds the video driver!

Now I just go to the 8940 for my PC support page and FIND all the files with the FIND DRIVER link:

These IS the BIOS, but IT IS NOT CRITICAL, only Recommended.

Seems to be part of the reason possibly. Only Critical ones picked up? Same goes for one that are on Windows Update I suspect?

In any event, it is 'known' that Support Assist and Dell Update seems to lag vs. ones posted on the Support page.

@DavG94, unfortunately, this is 'quiet normal'.

Dell puts up a new BIOS/Driver. Then, sometime later you might get an email and Support Assist is able to see it as well.

I didn't know (US BIOS as well) was updated until I saw your Post. Not only that, going to the US page and doing a 'find drivers' vs letting Dell run Dell Update (which Support Assist kicks off to find drivers). I get to the page, select Windows 11 and find all, and even THAT doesn't find the new BIOS. However, selecting BIOS vs. ALL shows the new BIOS.

Again, delay on Dell programs seems to be the way it works finding new files/drivers.

Best way, do it manually by going to the Support page.

Now, that said, personally, I'd wait some before installing a 'very new' BIOS. Wait until Dell gets the links to the new BIOS updated and Support Assist/Dell Update can find it. That look back here to see if it trouble free. Some later BIOS releases have caused problems for some users, like those with discrete Video cards.

@Chino de Oro

That's the issue.
on the first link here is what i get as the latest (for my service tag)

Without service tag :

Whereas I do see the latest in the second link you sent.

So it's still confusing on what I should do.

I don't put in any service tag.  The BIOS link was the first one in Recommandé group.  See screenshot.

Hi @ispalten

Thanks for the heads up.

That's the issue I have, I have not been receiving any new updates since a few months already.
I know that installing BIOS updates that just came out may cause issues.

Moreover, Dell Update Application | Driver Details | Dell UK seems to be incompatible in my case, for unknown reason.
Would that be why I'm not receiving updates?
And could I still update from 2.22.0 to a more recent one? If yes, which one should I use or in which order should I install the different versions?

Support Assist can be a good tool when it works properly.  However, it's redundancy of Windows Updates.  To make it simpler and no more confusion, I suggest to run Windows Updates to get security updates and system updates.  Drivers and firmware (BIOS) updates will be under optional updates.  You can use that list to check against versions on Dell support site once a month.  Dell releases new updates monthly just like second Tuesday updates from Microsoft.  You can opt to update all drivers but let wait out a month on BIOS firmware update, in case Dell might pull it due to issue.

In other words, you choose when to update, what to update, and at your own convenience schedule.

Hi @ispalten

Thanks for the detail explanation once again.

I'm also wondering if it's not due to the version of the Support Assist currently installed.

I have 4.0.16.0 currently, and when I download it from the Dell site, I see a 4.6.0.16649 on the executable.

Looking into what Chino de Oro said, I had a Windows update suggestion for the same version I have installed (weird)
I went and clicked install. I guess I might have waited before doing that...

I guess I'll wait until Support Assist synchronises up.

French S.A. appears to be a different level of the US one. Mine is 4.0.3 and the ONLY way I can see that is to open it and it is on the splash screen.

Dell S.A. d/l site does not report the version either, so I d/l'ed again and it is the same 4.0.3 version.

From what I understand, the Dell update app is gone this year.

I use Windows most of the time anyway so not a big deal IMO.
