XPS 8950, BIOS 1.14.0, UASP enclosure
Hello,
Does it support 20Gbps M.2 USB-C UASP enclosures on the back 20Gbps port? I am talking about UASP ones. It seems, it cannot read it. Seems to me, needs another bios update.
Thanks

Thunderbolt and USB-C are not the same, even though the plugs look/fit the same. You need a USB-C enclosure for your SSD. Only USB4 is compatible with TB4, TB3, USB3, etc, but the XPS 8950 doesn't have USB4.
The rear USB-C port on the XPS 8950 is USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 (Type-C). It's the fastest USB port on this PC and supports up to 20 Gbps. It requires a cable that supports USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 speeds. (The front USB-C port on XPS 8950 is only up to 10 Gbps.)

The BIOS firmware 1.14.0 was released to address security updates as disclosed in the Dell Security Advisories DSA-2023-180 and DSA-2023-113. It does not contain performance enhancements.
The XPS 8950 rear USB type C port does support 20 Gbps drive. But, not all (UASP) enclosures can support transmission bandwidth of 20 Gbps.
If you didn't get the expected transfer speed, check your enclosure and SSD drive. There is no BIOS update can fix your problem.

What does boot option have anything to do with a USB type C port transfer speed???

Although it was not mentioned anywhere in your post, I think you want to know if you can boot with the Orico enclosure on USB type C port?
Yes, it's possible on selected systems. You just need to enable thunderbolt boot support and UEFI network stack. Restart your machine and it should work.

I think you have some difficulty understanding my points here Sir.
First of all, yes, it is UASP enclosure. The bios does not see that enclosure. The enclosure has windows 10 OS nvme. If I put that nvme in other enclosure, it does see and I do see boot option in bios....and I can boot from that NVME.
As that Orico enclosure is not seeing as USB boot option in bios. As that Orico enclosure is UASP, it has different chipset and different protocol embedded, may be bios is not able to see it, that is my concern.
How do I boot , from that Orico enclosure, if I have same nvme drive inside it. Where do I see that option ? F12 is not showing me. What if, I have 3 , or even 5 other boot devices, in USB ports and if I am not seeing that thunderbolt option, how do I choose from where to boot, so bottom line is, the system is not seeing the enclosure or drive.

@jovanhimal , so my guess is correct, you wanted to know if your system supports boot from USB type C port. But your post title and description were asking if BIOS 1.14.0 supporting 20 Gbps on USB type C.
Well, the answer was given on previous post. If your system does not support thunderbolt boot, then it's a no go. UASP storage protocol can boot from SATA port, not USB. It does not have anything to do with firmware 1.14.0 or any previous firmware.

Ok, I did connect either front or back USB c port, the enclosure, and nvme drive, but still I am not seeing the boot option to boot from ? Is there anything I have to do in bios to see thunderbolt boot option , so that I can boot from

Check in your BIOS settings to see if there is an option for POST Behavior. If yes, select and Fastboot and enable Thorough. Next, under System Configuration, look for USB/Thunderbolt Configuration and checked all boxes including Enable Thunderbolt Boot Support and Enable Thunderbolt (and PCIe behind tbt). Finally, go to Advanced Boot Option and select the box to Enable UEFI Network Stack. Save and reboot.

@jovanhimal - Have you plugged that Orico enclosure into PC with power fully off? Then power on and tap F12 when you see the Dell splash screen. When the menu opens look for the option to boot from USB and see if the enclosure is listed there and bootable....

Dear Ron
I have heard a lot about you in this forum, and I always try to read your comment, and learn from your post
Thanks for looking into this, yes it DOES NOT show up in F12 boot selection screen, I believe either something not right for thunderbolt connections enclosure, like this one in Dell's firmware, or, the enclosure is not designed for this type

I am running this BIOS version and I have an Orico NvME external enclosure with the Micron3400 (the original 8950 drive) and I have no problem seeing this drive as a boot option using the same interface you mention.
At first I thought maybe it's not UASP but it says it is but it is only 10Gbps, not 20.
:)
