XPS 8960, connect to U2723QE

I am confused as to which cable/s I should use when connecting the U2723QE monitor to the XPS 8960 computer? I will not be using any other monitors just the one. And I will not be using a laptop. Currently I am hooked up with the supplied HDMI cable. Additionally, is it possible to hook up the Logi web cam to the monitor instead of the computer?

Key question: Do you have an add-in video card or only onboard Intel Graphics?

It sounds like you have an add-in video card with an HDMI output port, so HDMI(video card)>HDMI(monitor) is fine.

Always use ports on an add-in video card before using the onboard Intel DP port in XPS 8960 because the add-in video card will give better performance.

If you only had onboard Intel Graphics, you would want a DisplayPort(Intel Graphics)>DisplayPort(monitor) cable.

Not clear -to me- what your intent is "...to hook up the Logi web cam to the monitor...". So check out the user's guide

XPS8960 only supports DP interface. If you only have HDMI, it is recommended to use an adapter.

XPS 8960 integrated video port has DP only, therefore it is likely OP is connecting Dell monitor to a discrete video card using HDMI cable.

Dell U2723QE interface:

Interfaces
  • HDMI (HDCP 2.2)
  • DisplayPort 1.4
  • DisplayPort output
  • USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 upstream
  • USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 downstream (power up to 15W)
  • 4 x USB 3.2 Gen 2 downstream
  • USB 3.2 Gen 2 downstream with Battery Charging 1.2
  • USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 upstream/DisplayPort 1.4 Alt Mode (power up to 90W)

OP may prefer to connect a USB webcam to the Dell monitor instead of desktop as many users prefer to do so so when facing the monitor, webcam is facing user straight on too.  OP can use a USB C upstream cable (#8 monitor port) to connect monitor to PC.  after that any USB device including webcam or flash drive can plug in the monitor and in turn communicate with PC.

The monitor U2723QE offers video ports HDMI, DisplayPort, and USB-C.  It does not matter which connection you used, as long as the monitor can achieve display resolution of 4K at 60 Hz.  However, a USB-C connection can also activate the USB hub on monitor without additional USB cable connection to the PC.  If using HDMI or DisplayPort for video, you must connect the monitor USB upstream port to your PC in order to use the monitor USB hub.

For the webcam, you can connect it to the monitor USB hub if you connect the USB upstream port to your PC.

all the Dell oem discrete gpu for 8960 has DP 1.4 or HDMI 2.1 port.   OP current connection from video card HDMI 2.1 to monitor is fine.

you can connect a logi webcam with USB C cable to the monitor #15 port

but to use the camera you need to fist connect a USB C to USB A cable to the monitor #8 port and a regular USB port on PC.  this is called USB upstream cable.  the term upstream means that monitor passes the Webcam signal upstream to the PC.  note the monitor itself is just a relay station for USB web cam (it does not read camera signal itself)

you are probably already connecting PC video card HDMI to the monitor #3 HDMI port, so that is all correct.

@RoHe

the graphics card is the one that came with the pc NVIDIA(R) GeForce rtx(tm) 4070 12gb gddr6x.   From what I have gathered from all the responses it appears that I use the HDMI CABLE IN port #4 and the USB cable in port#8.  Is this correct?   FYI I am an a novice concerning all of this and some of the terms are confusing to me.

Thanks for your help

you can use the included USB A to C cable or

USB C - C cable as the needed USB upstream cable between monitor #8 port and XPS PC USB C port.

Cables Included
1. Power cable 2. DisplayPort 1.8 M cable (DisplayPort to DisplayPort)
3. USB-C Gen2 1.0 M cable (A to C)
4. Type-C 1.0 M cable (C-C cable)

the monitor spec did not mention a HDMI cable is included.  Did you actually connect a included DP to DP cable from video card of PC to monitor #4 DP port?  perhaps you thought it was HDMI cable?

Thank you to all for the responses.  My system is all set up expect the cables are too short for what I had planned.

Thanks again.
