9500 RAM Upgrade Options

Yet another RAM upgrade thread 🤭

I bought some Corsair 16GB (1x16GB) DDR4 SODIMM memory recently (CMSX16GX4M1A2400C16). Turns out it isn't compatible with the XPS 9500. The tech support mentioned it was likely because of the lower clock speed (2666mhz).

On Crucial's compatibility list for this device, they show 2666mhz memory so I'm hesitant to trust the RAM mentioned there.

Before I go ahead, will Crucial Ballistix SODIMM DDR4 3200 32GB (2x16GB) (BL2K16G32C16S4B) be compatible with this device?

Thanks

Edit: Definitely can't trust that list - the Crucial RAM runs at 1.35v rather than 1.2v. Any suggestions for compatible RAM?

I'm now looking at (HX429S17IBK2/32) which according to some folks on Reddit is compatible - but that compatibility assurance comes at a £60 premium...

Crucial is what we usually recommend for non Dell branded memory, as it is guaranteed to work in a Dell.   Dell's have a history of compatibility with some brands - may work OK in one and not in another.

We also recommend only having one brand/type of memory. Mixing memory often results in problems.

The Crucial memory I find is 1.2V

Thanks for responding!

If you check the link in the first post, some of those "compatible sticks" run at 2666 mhz and/or1.35v.

Tech support told me 2666 mhz will not work with the 9500 (hence why the Corsair Vengance sticks aren't working).

If I'm not mistaken, the1.35v Crucial modules will also not work with the 9500 as the memory needs to run at 1.2v.

Most of the Crucial Ballistic's are 1.35V.  I saw one on the list that was 1.2V.

Crucial has been recommended on this forum for as long as I've been on here (19 years) and maybe before I joined.

Look at the Crucial listing again. The speed is not what you think on many, for example "DDR4 PC4-21300 • CL=19 • Unbuffered •; NON-ECC • DDR4-2666" is 21300 speed.  2666 is only if the PC supports "XMP" mode and only certain gaming PC's (e.g. Alienware's) may have that.

I use Corsair in my self built desktop I use in my recording studio so I'm not against Corsair.  It goes back to what I said in my first response about working in some and not the other.

Hi guys, just bought and installed a 32GB (2x16GB) ram upgrade from Corsair and it worked like a charm on my XPS 15 9500 from 2020... !

Looks like their latest SODIMM DDR4 works just fine natively at 1,2v and 3200MHz downclocked to 2933 MHz ! Hope it can help ! Crucial's RAM is just too expensive in France (very bad distribution......)
