Brand new XPS-16 monitor an eyesore to read

XPS 16 9640

XPS 16 9640

Though I've had several Dell laptops in the past, I'm new to this forum. I'm also new to being super disappointed by my Dell purchase. I had an XPS-16 that I loved since 2021, so I replaced it in January with a new XPS-16 because I fully assuming that the new XPS would be at least as good as my last one, if not better. I was very wrong.

I particularly liked the monitor on my old XPS because, with 500 nits, I could see text reasonably well when working outdoors -- which I do often. Therefore, I made sure that my new XPS also has 500 nits, which it does. However, most text (e.g., in a Word document or in an email) looks terrible at all times on my new laptop! It looks grainy, as though the lines that make up letters/numbers aren't clear and crisp. Even though the new XPS  has a sleek design, the text on the screen makes it an eyesore to look at.

I tried adjusting the ClearType Settings, but it didn't help.

Dell Tech Support told me that there's nothing they can do to fix the problem because its source is my lapop monitor itself. Despite being 500 nits, my brand new laptop only has a monitor resolution of 1920x1200, which is far inferior to the quality of my last XPS-16 that had a resolution of 3840x2400. Why would Dell suddenly skimp on monitor quality like this?

Unfortunately, I went on vacation right after purchasing my new XPS and, by the time I got back and spoke with Dell Tech Support, the 30-day window for returning my purchase had expired. So now it seems that I'm stuck for the next few years with a laptop whose monitor is an eysore to read at all times.

If I have misunderstood the situation and there is actually something I can do to improve the visibility of text on my new XPS monitor, please let me know!

Short of an external monitor (or replacing the screen with a higher resolution panel, there's not much you can do.

This model does have a 3840X2400 OLED screen option, but the upgrade will be both expensive and will void your warranty.

The other option would  be to sell the system and order an upgraded model that's more satisfactory.

@Candour

Yes, but directly comparing two very different resolution screens with very different screen technology directly -- at least as far as brightness -- is not possible.

Thanks for your quick response and helpful input. Is my understanding correct that the 3840X2400 OLED screen option comes with 400 nits, not 500 nits?
