DELL XPS 9560 latency issue Wdf01000.sys

Question

I am trying to use Native Instrument Traktor 3 Pro with a Dell XPS 9560 computer, but it does have latency issues. Especially the driver Wdf01000.sys. Native Instrument is saying:

"The Wdf01000.sys is nothing that could easily be disabled. This driver belongs to the Windows kernel and is usually not to be expected to cause CPU spikes. Users reported such high values when connecting USB 2.0 devices to USB 3.0 ports. They could solve their problems by connecting their devices to another USB 2 controller instead of the USB 3 controller. We highly recommend updating your USB 3 drivers first in this case.

If this does not resolve the issue, the only thing to help moving forward would be to contact your computer's manufacturer for help with this driver, as there is nothing we can do on our side to fix the issue with this driver. I wish I had better news for you."

I did try to update the USB driver, no change.

Could anybody at Dell help me on this issue?

Hi, thanks for your reply. I did used LatencyMon to assess my rig and it showed that  Wdf01000.sys is causing the issue.  I disabled wifi, display driver basically everythhing, and it definitely improved, but this driver still causing issue.

Taming systems for latency/recording can be a challenge.

If you haven't done it, download and run the free (and popular) Resplendence Latency Mon. Will help in identifying what could cause it.

For starters, disable Support Assist as it has been known to cause audio latency problems. Wi-Fi is another.

In my case, I could never fully "clean" my laptop. that is used for customer on site recording. Fortunately it came with an M.2 SSD and space (and cables) to install an additional hard drive or full size SSD. I installed an SSD and created a dual boot system. The second install only has Windows, needed device drivers and DAW software. If I want to use the laptop for general work I boot to the original Dell install, if I want to do DAW work I boot to the second install. This was drastic but worked for me.

FWIW, this forum is primarily users helping users, not a direct line to tech support.

You said you did update the USB driver but is any of the quote where it refers to USB 2 devices being plugged into your USB 3 ports true? (please elaborate on what you have plugged into your computer when you are experiencing the latency)

I use Traktor Kontrol S4 MK2 as dj kontroller, i would assume that this device is USB 2. Unfortunately XPS 9560 has only 2 USB 3 ports, so cant do much on this.

Unless you want to see if a clean Windows install fixes your issue, it looks like you might be stuck.

That file, from research, could be a trackpad driver, external mouse driver or some other external device.

Do you get the error with and/or without the kontroller connected?

I don't think its the USB version problem. My MOTU Ultra Lite MK5 recording interface native interface is USB C. But it works equally well plugged into a USB 2.0 port, 3.1 port or even a Thunderbolt 3 port. Does not cause any latency issues.

One hit I found notes there is a virus that emulates that file. Have you done a virus and spyware scans?

A comment to "contact your computer manufacturer"" is typical point the finger as not my problem or I don't know and too lazy to find out whose problem it is. By saying its not my problem the customer is left to try and find a solution to whoever's problem it is. Fought this for years working in a multi-vendor network.

I cannot really test it without the controller as the soundcard is in the device, without it cant use Traktor 3. I will do a clean windows install in the coming days to see if it changes anything.

You can run Latency Mon without the Kontroller. PC has to be "clean" before attaching and/or running apps.

If you want to do a clean install either use a different system disc (SSD) or do a full disc image (all partitions) backup to a separate drive. If you wanted to return to the Dell setup you will have the backup. If you don't have disc imaging software, the free Macrium Reflect will work. Actually you should be making periodic full disc images, anyway.

I'd suggest malwarebytes for a good scanner (it can scan for rootkits if you enable the setting for it)

There was another thread here somewhere that I tried to help with Wdf01000.sys and latency, but not sure it ever amounted to anything.
