Precision power adapter for XPS 13
Hi,
the power adapter of my XPS 13 (9360) seems to be defective and now I wonder if I could use my company laptops charger (Precision 5530) as a replacement.
The charger for the XPS uses 45W and 19.5V while the Precision delivers 130W and and also 19.5V. The plugs are identical and the XPS charges when I plug it in. Nevertheless I want to be on the safe side so maybe someone can confirm if the chargers are compatible. I also read that polarity should be the same on both adapters and as far as I can see that's not the case.
Thank you for your support!

@kasparlov Quick additional note about polarity. The polarity is the same on both adapters. It's just the diagram that has been flipped horizontally. Notice that the "gap" in the outside ring of the connector diagram, which allows the line from the positive icon to extend into the the inside of the connector, appears on the right side on the 45W adapter and the left side on the 130W adapter. But both diagrams indicate that the outside is negative and the inside is positive.

@kasparlov It's completely fine. It's important to match voltage levels, but Dell has used 19.5V for all of its laptop power adapters for over 15 years now. As for amperage, laptops will not draw more amperage than they need; a high wattage power adapter will not "force" more power than the system wants or is designed to accept. So as long as you're using a genuine Dell power adapter and its wattage is at least as high as what the system is designed for, you're good to go. I've had a Dell 130W power adapter in my living room for about a decade, and over that time I've used it with several laptops with power requirements ranging from 45-130W, and it's been fine on every single one of them.

Hello,
My cat just knocked over my work laptop, bending the USB adapter. I use the 130W charger. Will the 45W work? I dont want to spend 90 dollars on a new one. thanks

@thaltner If your system is designed for a 130W power source, I’m not sure it will accept 45W at all, and even if it does, you will likely see severely reduced performance.
