RTX 3060 and Internal Laptop Display

@rodorr2  The fact that the internal display is wired to the Intel GPU doesn't mean that you can't use the NVIDIA GPU to accelerate content being displayed on it.  The NVIDIA GPU works via NVIDIA Optimus, which basically has the GPU doing the rendering work when needed, while allowing the GPU to be completely disabled when its performance isn't needed, which saves battery life.  If you want to know more about the various possible dual GPU laptop designs and their various pros and cons, I wrote an explainer in the post marked as the answer in this thread.  Most of the drawbacks to Optimus wouldn't apply to a laptop built-in display as opposed to an external display, so in all likelihood your NVIDIA GPU will work just as you need it to even through Optimus and you'll get better battery life out of the deal.

Thanks for the quick display. My only issue is I want to use the Nvidia Control Panel to set my display the way I like and as far as I can see you can't perform that type of function. I haven't read your linked thread yet but I will in a bit. Again thanks.

The reason the options you’re expecting are missing is because the NVIDIA GPU doesn’t have direct control of the interface driving the display, so it can’t control the things you want it to control. You’d be limited to whatever was available in Intel Graphics Control Panel / Command Center:

What I don't understand is that I have a Dell Precision 7510 with both an built in display chip ( I can't recall as I'm sitting here which display chip it is) and an Nvidia GPU (K1000M) and I can switch the internal display to use either the generic chip or the Intel GPU on the internal display. Do you know why Dell decided not to allow this on the XPS 9710?

@rodorr3  Glad I could help.  On the XPS 17 models, when you have the top-end GPU as you do, there's a BIOS option that allows you to have the discrete GPU take direct control of the display outputs instead of the Intel GPU as is the default, but apparently Dell didn't extend that toggle capability to include the built-in display on this system.  I'm not sure why, but if I had to guess, they probably figured this capability would be useful on the display outputs (in order to enable things like G-Sync and VR) but would have less benefit on the built-in display.  The main benefit there would be if you had apps that didn't work well through Optimus and/or really needed all active displays to be run by the same GPU for some reason.  But those needs are more likely to arise in professional use cases that the Precision 7000 Series systems are aimed at, and less likely to occur in enthusiast settings that the XPS models are aimed at.  And even on the Precision systems, my recollection is that setting the discrete GPU to control the built-in display can cause black screen issues when docking and undocking the system, so that setup has its drawbacks.
