XPS 15 (9500) plugged in but will not recognize it is charging

My laptop has started to not recognize that it is plugged into a power source through all three of its usb type c ports. The only way I have been able to circumvent this issues is by completely powering off my laptop then plugging in the charger, and finally starting the laptop back up. This is the only way I have seemed to be able to get it to charge. Is this some sort of BIOS error going or is there something wrong with my laptop. I use it heavily so I really need a solution to this problem before my shut down trick stops working. I've noticed a few others have this problem on here as well so is this a fix Dell is working on or a result of something else?

Mine did this when I like first got it (within like maybe 5 days of purchasing the laptop). I got on the phone with my friend who works for an IT company and has set up XPS computers for his work place and knows them inside and out. Update your drivers and it fixes the issue. Keeping drivers up to date really helps prevent these issues from happening. It was real funny when he told me "All the work XPS's had this issue within hours of me setting them up."

Encountered a similar problem with my XPS, but after some troubleshooting it's just on the right side USB-C port AND only with one orientation of the charging cable.  Charger works in either orientation on the left side.  Any ideas why?  Seems like there's something wrong with the right side port (which I normally use for charging) or I plugged in the charging cable the same way for the last 4 years and finally reversed it yesterday!

Board replaced twice, still new issues coming up regularly. Worst notebook I ever had!

This is a persistent problem for years. No predictable symptoms other than none of the ports can see the adapter when plugged in.  It’s hard to replicate the problem and explore the recommended solutions when the battery has run down and the laptop doesn’t see the adapter.  I’m up to date on all releases.

Just wanted to add my experience to this thread - my original XPS 9500 i7 and the replacement XPS 9500 i9 both have this issue. Dell has been silent on the issue and their response to this has been just to replace the whole unit or motherboard - which itself is not a fix!!!

This issue is present on both Linux and Windows. This is either a firmware or a hardware issue. No BIOS update, nor any BIOS setting, has truly fixed this problem. The issue returns and goes away sporadically.

Same thing over here. The laptop stops charging and the battery starts emptying when it goes to sleep. When I turn it on in the morning, I get a BIOS message that the battery is almost empty. On several occasions, it would also not charge even if it was connected to the charger (tried different ports and different chargers as I have two). I ran the whole battery of diagnostics and nothing came up. BIOS and everything else is up to date. I had to drain the battery to zero and reboot for the laptop to recognize the charger again.

Reading how common this issue is, I suppose it's a miracle it took 3 years to manifest...

@vervexart​ Im having the same issue now after 3 year and it happened the week the warranty was going out.

Its been sent out to depot twice. 1st time logic board and charger replaced.. said it was my bad battery.. even if the batt is bad should still power the laptop that sits on a counter plugged in all the time.

so i bought a battery same issues. sent it back of course depot tech only mess with it for like 1 hour so it works for that time. but once it charges 100% then it shows no ac adaptor.

So now im fighting for a system replacement. but i heard even that comes back with the same issue.

@DELL-Nat M​ I am having the same issue, changed the setting but the laptop will still usually refuse to charge when on. (It has still charged a few times since having the issue, and will always charge when fully off)

I have a Dell XPS 15 9500.  I also started experiencing the charger not being recognized issue several months ago and occasional crashing of the system at boot up. I cleared all of the BIOS settings and made sure all of the drivers were up to date.  The problem is if you have the laptop plugged in and then boot up and get into windows, the laptop won't charge. And if you pull out the charging cable and try to plug it back into any port, you get the error message that it's not recognized. The only way I have been able to fix this is to turn the laptop on without being plugged in, boot to windows and then plug in the charger.  It seems to work that way most of the time.   And there is absolutely nothing wrong with the charger because the same thing happens with a different Dell power charger.   I will say that I use custom battery settings to start charging at 45% and stop at 80% to protect the battery.   

There has got to be something wrong with either the My Dell Power Manager software or a BIOS setting or port setting that is causing this problem.  I did see the recommended solution and changed the Power Management to Standard and the laptop booted up and charged ok I pulled out the cable, and plugged it back in again and it charged ok.   But this is NOT a real fix.  It will charge the laptop to 100% and I want to maximize battery life and stop charging at 80%.  I think Dell engineers need to look into this and provide a fix for this problem. It is so widespread that just about everyone with this model is experiencing the problem.  It does not seem to be related to the motherboard or port failure as people continue to have this problem after replacement.   There used to be a separate Power Management app In the Windows store but it was apparently not compatible with Windows 11 and was pulled.  Dell integrated power management into My Dell software.  I hope this can get fixed.

Changing the Power Mode to Standard and starting the laptop plugged in before turning it on did not seem to work.  When Windows 11 boots up, it does not charge.   The only way this works is to start the laptop up on battery power, boot to Windows and then plug in the charger.

there is no "standard" battery setting on my XPS 15 9500.
I can only change Power modes like "Balanced" or "Best Performance".
This however does not change anything about the issue

We are encountering similar issues with three XPS 15 laptops, all exhibiting the same problems. They do not charge when plugged in unless the battery is completely drained. We have attempted to address this by adjusting the default battery settings, replacing the battery, and trying a different power adapter.

Hi all,

Could you please try these steps and let me know if they fix the issue for you?

Follow these steps to perform a hard reset:

  1. Turn off the laptop.

  2. Disconnect  the AC adapter and remove the battery or simply remove the base cover and disconnect the battery cable.

  3. Disconnect all devices such as USB drives, printers, webcams, and media cards (SD/xD).

  4. Press and hold the power button for 15 to 20 seconds to drain the residual power.

  5. Connect the AC adapter and battery.

  6. Turn on the computer.
