I too am experiencing the same issues, only on a 9730 purchased May 2023.  BugCheck x124 is the leading indicator in the system event log (happened tonight 9:30 ET US).

Did anyone figure out what's happening?  My laptop is 100% current according to Dell Support and Windows Update - still overheats to the point of too hot to touch.

Linus tech tips did a series of videos about Windows Waking from sleep unexpectedly and other issues with modern standby. Look up "Linus tech tips windows sleep" and watch their "forcing me to buy macbooks" and modern standby videos.

I think they determined that if you put your laptop to sleep while it's connected to the power it doesn't know when it gets unplugged and it's asleep still thinking it's plugged in and therefore ok to wake up for maintenance.

The trick is to unplug it BEFORE you put it to sleep.

Personally I never trusted windows sleep and I always do a full shutdown. But apparently unplugging before sleep is the way to go.

As for general overheating. I've got an XPS 17 9710. And it overheats when it's in use on a hard desk - which is an absolute failure of design. I need to elevate the front or back slightly to allow more air in.

I've bought some adhesive rubber feel on Amazon that came in all sorts of sizes so I'm gonna try to redesign my $5,000 laptop so that it's slightly raised up at the back. It's outrageous that dell have still not acknowledged the issue with the design of these laptops

I would agree with the above. Absolute failure of design. The first time my XPS17 overheated I lost all my data. The tech came out and "fixed it" but it overheated again and once again the ports went haywire. I never did get all my data back. My XPS15 was great, but it is getting old, so I thought I'd try my XPS17 again. It started to overheat again, so the tech came out again and replaced the fan and some other parts. That was a few months ago, now it is overheating again. I paid $5,500 for this XPS17 touchscreen computer THREE YEARS AGO, as they told me it was the best computer they had aside from something you would use at NASA, AND I HAVE NEVER BEEN ABLE TO USE IT. Tech support has done what they can, but it doesn't fix the problem. So basically Dell is just selling these computers with a faulty design and configuration, and when you try to talk to a customer service person, they say there is nothing they can do. And I PAID FOR THE PREMIUM SUPPORT PLUS, which means good manners, good technical skills, but no idea how to make a customer happy -- BY FIXING THE PROBLEM. I should have a had a replacement unit long ago. I asked if I could at least give it back and get another XPS15 instead. They actually work. BUT NO, that was not possible. Whoever is in charge of customer service at Dell missed a few lessons somewhere. If you need more info on this common problem, do a simple Google search on "Dell XPS17 overheating". That will tell you all you need to know. And to think I was going to switch to APPLE before I bought this. I guess, I'm the dummy now, at least according to Dell. VERY UNHAPPY CUSTOMER, who has owned 4 Dells. There will not be a fifth.

Same issue here.  Turn the thing on and it instantly surgest to 89F on any active processor.  I've got it elevated with a fan blowing over the vents to move air away, and still no reduction in temperature.  Next step is to open it up and see if vents are blocked, etc.; then buy a cooling pad.

Just FYI the XPS overheating legacy continues. I've got the XPS 9730 with Nvidia 4800 chip. It readily overheats with the slightest usage. I'm currently using Throttlestop and Windows energy saver profiles to keep this under control. I believe the new XPS laptops are flawed by design.

Well surely they wouldn't do it on purpose?

But yes, I wouldn't be surprised if he issue hasn't been fixed.

I'm having this problem with my 9720 too.  I had problems with support assist saying my SSD was failing.  I paid for Dell Premium Support and it was garbage.  What a rip off.  They sent replacement SSD's 3 times, I couldn't get them to try anything else. They were going to send a 4th but come on, that didn't work 3 times before...   Had to back up all my data and reinstall stuff 3 times.  Support was clueless and totally rude.  I'm not going to bother contacting Dell about this overheating now.  They just waste my time.  I'm never buying a Dell again.

A partial solution is to disable Turbo Boost mode. This can help reduce overheating by preventing automatic CPU overclocking.

You can follow Jason321’s video for BIOS instructions (Restart > press F2 > Performance > Intel Turbo Boost Technology > Disable, then save and exit).

Alternatively, the following resources may be useful:

• A guide demonstrating how to cap the maximum processor state to prevent overclocking:

• A Reddit thread explaining how to use a small tool called PowerSettingsExplorer to reveal hidden power options and adjust Turbo Boost behavior from Aggressive to a less intensive profile (Enabled, Enabled Efficiency, or Disabled): https://www.reddit.com/r/DellXPS/comments/une0x6/dell_overheating_fix/?share_id=aztd85s3wDi5ZXGPUcw0s

Note: All of these methods disable overclocking at all times. As a result, you may experience reduced performance in high-demand workloads such as 3D applications.

Hope this helps!
