XPS 9315, 4K LCD, battery life

Question

HI everyone,3 years ago I bought 2x XPS 9315 same spec but one had the 4K Touch Display.The regular Laptop has great battery lifeThe 4K device has always been rubbish, less than 2 hours.  I've fitted a new battery but no real change.Can any one shed any light or offer an explanation for this?

The 4K display consumes far more power both itself and in that the GPU has to work that much harder to render that resolution -- it's completely normal to lose as much as half of your battery runtime to a system that has a 4K display relative to one with a lower resolution.

Thanks for the reply.Should I expect an improvement depending on the resolution or is the power consumer more baked in?

You can reduce the screen brightness as much as you can tolerate, and reduce the CPU speed as much as the same -- these will help. You can't get the same battery runtime from a 4K model as one that has an FHD screen, no matter what you do.

I think I've been an idiot for 3 years !!

I've always adjusted the zoom and kept the resolution in 4k. Dropping the resolution seems to have made a massive difference and once I've compensated the zoom my footprint is no different.......

A 4K screen drains battery much faster because the display itself uses more energy, and the GPU has to work twice as hard to render all those extra pixels. It’s completely standard to see up to a 50% drop in battery life on a 4K model compared to a lower-resolution one.
