Yes, it is possible to install NVMe drives in a Dell PowerEdge R550 server, but support depends entirely on your specific chassis configuration and hardware controller.
NVMe Storage Options
Front Drive Bays via Hardware RAID: You can support up to 3 front-accessible NVMe SSDs if your server is configured with a dedicated Dell PERC H755 Front RAID Controller. Note that you cannot mix NVMe drives with SAS or SATA drives within the same drive array.
Dedicated Boot Drives (BOSS-S2): If you only need NVMe speeds for your operating system, you can use the optional BOSS-S2 (Boot Optimized Storage Subsystem) module. This hardware carrier slides into the back of the chassis and supports up to two M.2 NVMe SSDs in a hardware RAID 1 mirror.
PCIe Adapter Cards: You can install standard U.2 or M.2 NVMe drives into the server's empty PCIe 4.0 slots using third-party PCIe adapter cards. These will function as independent, direct-attached storage drives but cannot be integrated into a front hot-swap backplane.
