Installing windows gets stuck

Hi,

I recently brought a 'Dell Poweredge 1850' it has 2x 73Gb HDD, I have tried to install 'Windows server 2008' (Not R2) however, when I go to install the OS it will freeze on copying windows files it will usually stop at '55%' I have no idea why this happens, I have downloaded the copy from Microsoft website so it isn't pirated ect, I have configured RAID correctly with RAID 0. Can somebody please point out why this isn't working!

Thanks!!

RE: Installing windows gets stuck

I saw this once with a bad DVD drive, however, here are a couple of things I would try:

  • Download the ISO again.
  • Burn the ISO to DVD again.
  • Check the hash or use a download manager to ensure integrity of download.
  • Burn the DVD at a slower speed, using different software, or a different drive/PC.
  • Install from USB instead of DVD.
  • Try a different DVD drive.
  • Make sure to leave all RAID defaults intact and be sure to Initialize after creation.
  • Make sure your RAID/PERC firmware is up to date (BIOS and ESM first).

I would strongly recommend against using RAID 0.

RE: Installing windows gets stuck

I have tried all of these except from:

  • Make sure your RAID/PERC firmware is up to date (BIOS and ESM first).

How would I update these?

RE: Installing windows gets stuck

You can:

  • Find an OS you can install and update from the OS.
  • Boot to SBUU/SMTD, choose Update Firmware, then insert SUU as the repository.
  • Create a bootable custom repository using Repository Manager.

There is a good chance the native drivers in Server 2008 require more recent firmware.

Do you think, if I disabled RAID in the BIOS it would work?

RE: Installing windows gets stuck

Aside from the firmware, I might suspect one or both of your drives are bad.

You could also try configuring only one disk in a RAID 0 at a time and installing to it, or try a RAID 1. (Be sure NOT to mess with RAID settings like stripe size, etc.) Also, try letting the Initialization fully complete before attempting.

RE: Installing windows gets stuck

Disabling RAID "may" work ... you could try that.

Ok thanks,

If I was to try and install windows server 2012 on this and disable RAID, will it pick up my drives? Or will I have to install the raid drivers as well even though its disabled?
