Hi Martijn Degreve, Thank you for the update. Check if there is any disc in the optical drive. Also, do let us know if you hear the clicking sound from the right or left side of the system. Please follow the steps below to release static power from the system.  1) Shut down the system 2) Remove all the external peripherals including the battery and the adapter. 3) Press and hold the power button for 30 seconds 4) Connect the AC adapter and the battery and power on the system. Please update us if it helped you in getting the issue resolved.

(If you're using a mouse, point to the lower-right corner of the screen, move the mouse pointer up, and then click Search.) 2. Enter On-Screen Keyboard in the search box, and then tap or click On-Screen Keyboard. For Onscreen keyboard in Windows 7 , you can follow the steps below 1) Open On-Screen Keyboard by clicking the Start button 2) Clicking All Programs 3) Clicking Accessories 4) Clicking Ease of Access 5) And then click On-Screen Keyboard. However, when you press any keys, the backlight will be turned on again until and unless you manually turn it off.

Hi sjcbill, Windows 10 has not been tested on Inspiron N5040 model and there are no compatible drivers for Windows 10 in support for this model. Hence, you will have to roll back the Operating system to the previous one. You can follow the steps below to roll back to the previous Operating system. But before that please backup all the important files and data 1. Go to Settings>Update &security>Recovery. 2. Look for the Go back to Windows XX entry which will say either 7 or 8.1 depending on your former OS. 3. Click on Get started and follow the prompts to go through the restoral process. Once it is complete you will find yourself in the familiar confines of your past operating system. Note - if you have previously cleaned up after your Windows 10 install by using the Disk Cleanup tool and removed the old Windows installation files this option will not be available. Hi cbmatjack, Please provide us the error code that you might have received after running Hardware diagnostic. Also, check the status of the Harddrive in BIOS. To go to BIOS you need to shut down the system then push the power button and immediately keep on tapping F2 every second until you see the BIOS screen. You can also try reseating the Harddrive on your system by following the steps provided in the link below http://dell.to/1M2NV1X

Power on the system, at Dell logo tap F12 continuously every second, this will take you to Advanced boot options. 2. With the help of the arrow keys, choose diagnostics option and run the diagnostics. Please update us about the result. Incase you get any error code provide us the same.  We would also like to know if you hear any beep sound in a pattern.

Hi quakerweb, Sorry to hear about your system. If you are able to turn on the system, then you can definitely try backing up the files and data. If it doesn't get to the Windows, you can try safemode with networking. You can also convert the internal Harddrive to an external one by purchasing a converter from any local or online store. To convert the internal Harddrive to an external one, so that it will be changed from SATA to USB. You can contact a local technician if you need assistance on that.

Power on the system, at Dell logo tap F12 continuously every second, this will take you to Advanced boot options. 2. If you do not get any error message, check the system in safe mode with networking If Your system is running Windows 7 follow the steps below 1) Restart your computer. 2) When the Dell logo screen appears, press F8 several times. 3) With the help of up and down arrow keys, choose safemode with networking and hit enter. Hi MegaLeon, We appreciate you running the LCD BIST test to check the Display. As per the 6 beep code provided it indicates that the system has Video card failure. So, the Videocard needs to be replaced. Hence, private message us the service tag or the order number of the system to check the warranty status on it.
