Dual-PERC T630 x18 LFF questions

Hello,

I recently bought a Dell PowerEdge T630 18x LFF server for my homelab (what a beauty !) with PERC H730 PCIe. Reading the owner's manual, I found out that it is possible to use two PERCs simultaneously, which could be interesting since I would like to use 18x 20TB... I did note that the PERC H730 officially supports LUNs up to 64TB but this was already the case on the PERC H710P that I have in my R720XD and I use a 72TB LUN without any problem (any advice is welcome though!).

Back to my question, while doing some research to understand how the dual-PERC mode behaves, I came across this topic where @BSmith-MMO was mentionning "default unifed mode". How does it work ? Is it available on T630 / PERC H730 / PERC H730P ? Both monolithic and PCIe versions ? Thanks in advance

I would like to do OBR6 (One big RAID 6) because 20TB drives will take a lifetime to rebuild in case of failure... The idea is to start with 4x 20TB and then expand the LUN by adding disks identical to the first ones 1 by 1, as my needs evolve. Again, any advice is welcome.

------------

Bonjour,

Hello tigerblue77,

In the 13th generation the T630 does not support split mode:

Dell 13th generation PowerEdge enclosure or backplane with Split Mode capability. The following servers support Split Mode:

* R730 x24

* R620 x24

Hello as for this there’s restriction on how many disks you can use when configuring RAID.

As for the drive size, that depends on the OS you are using, so you could find out with the OS provider.

Hello, can you give more details ? It's not clear at all and doesn't really answer my questions about "default unified mode" behavior and dual-PERC usefulness in my use case. About number of drives, as I said, I have the 18 LFF drives chassis so it should be handled as explained in the owner's manual. Tell me if I'm wrong.

Hello Sorry my previous answer was unclear to you. https://dell.to/3NRo5sw If that unified mode is the backplane mode modified like in the link above, “The Dell 14th generation PowerEdge servers supports a new internal storage topology” I ’m afraid the supports start with the 14G servers and T630 is a 13G.

Hello,

No problem, thanks for your answer ! Apparently it's supported in 13G but can you explain how "Unified mode" works exactly ?

It's written :

This configuration is used for high performance mode with no failover or High Availability (HA) functionality. The expander splits the internal drive array between the two storage controllers.

and

Unified mode —This is the default mode. The primary PERC controller has access to all the drives connected to the backplane even if a second PERC controller is installed.

So does it mean that I can create a single LUN with the 18 drives and that it will automatically use both RAID controllers to increase overall performance ?

Okay but I'm talking about the T630, can you help me more specifically please?

I haven't found the installation and maintenance manual for this model but, based on the one for the T640 (its successor), I see that none of the schematics for the 18-drive LFF backplane propose the use of dual controller: https://www.dell.com/support/manuals/fr-ch/poweredge-t640/pet640_ism_pub/c%C3%A2blage-du-fond-de-panier?guid=guid-bd1e08bb-b14e-4f08-9289-ed3b014a2594&lang=fr-fr

Also, what is the difference between figure 8 and figure 9 of this documentation?

So let me ask you again:

  • Does the 18-disk LFF backplane accept the use of two PERC controllers?
  • Would I be able to create only one LUN, seen by both controllers?
  • If so, will this allow me to benefit from increased performance via the use of two controllers?

Excuse my insistence but I don't want to end up with a second useless/unusable PERC card
