Dell Webcam Central "no supported webcam"?

Hello,

I have a Dell Inspiron M5030. I don't remember how long I've had it, but I believe it was less than a year. I've been having problems with my webcam. I was trying to cam with my friend but it said that I didn't have a webcam (when I really do have one). Then I opened up Dell Webcam Central and it said that there was no webcam detected and that I needed to plug one in. I uninstalled the program and reinstalled it but nothing happened. I tried looking online but I found results for other Dell models. Can someone help me out here? I'd appreciate it. Thank you in advance.

TeddyBearxx,

Start, control panel, programs and features, Dell Webcam Central, uninstall.

Also remove Skype and and Skype plug ins.

Restart your computer.

Install Dell Webcam Central

See if webcam works, then download and install the latest version of Skype

So after weeks of having the same problem and reading what i thought was every message board and help site, and installing and uninstalling more things than i can remember i finally figured it out. What you need to do is take off the front plastic of your laptop (the bezel, i think people are calling it) . It will just pop off if you pull it from inside (like knuckles to screen is the best i can describe it). Then unscrew the screen with a little screw driver and bend it forward. Then all i did was fiddle with this plastic tape going down from the webcam to the base of the laptop and it worked. Make sure through this whole process your laptop is on and your web cam central is open. as soon as you touch the tape the light should come on indicating its working, Sounds sketchy but i am beyond technologically challeneged and it was honestly super easy. Goodluck!!

Have you tried following Ricks webcam troubleshooting sticky here?

I clicked on the trouble shoot link for Dell Webcams, and I followed every step except the part where it said that I needed to click "imaging devices".. Unfortunately, I don't have it and I don't know what to do.

Teddybearxx......

Did you see the post "Dell Web cam issues Solved" ?

I know what your problem is.... I know why your cam is NOT showing up in device manager under "imaging devices" and I know what you can do to fix it.

Although I have posted a thread on this issue for the MANY users having this same problem I will post the steps to fix this here for you again.

First... this problem occurs because your computer goes into standby mode and your hard disc drive is going into standby as well. The issue is actually a power distribution problem with the root USB hubs. Your cam hardware is connected to one of these hubs and does not for some reason get noticed after hard drive standby mode.

1. Turn off your computer.

2. pull power plug

3.pull battery out

4. Hold power button for 10 seconds

5. Put battery back and power plug and turn back on the computer.

You will now see that your imaging device is once again where is should be. Why? Because you have re set the Hard drive state.

This alone will NOT fix your problem completely though. You must now tell your computer NOT to put your hard drives to sleep. Follow the next few steps and your web cam issues will be gone for good.

1. Right click on the battery icon on your task bar

2 select power opotions

3. What ever plan your using select "advanced power options"

4. Find your hard disc options and open them.

5. Set the number/minutes to a very high number ....(over 1000 even more if you leave computer on for long time while not in use)

6. make sure to SAVE your settings.

The key to this fix is to Keep your hard drive from entering sleep mode. You can still allow the computer to sleep while not in use, but just don't let the hard drives sleep as well.

Let me know if this helps you :)

@whatsit

I did all of the things you told me and it still didn't get anything.. I went to go look for the Imaging Devices but all I found was an unknown device. I forgot to mention that I've restarted my computer to factory default ONCE. I was planning to do it again if the webcam decides not to work -.-

THis sounded extremely plausable...  I tried pulling the battery out & held down the power-button for more than 10 seconds, but the problem remains.  I have "Imaging Devices" in the Device Manager, but the Integrated WebCam is still absent...

@PudgyOne

I did that twice and  I still didn't get anything. I think the reason why it's not working is because I don't have the "imaging devices" in my devices file in my computer. The problem is, I don't know how to get it back.

This is a great suggestion, and it does work. However, you don't always have to unscrew the monitor. I simply adjusted the very top of the strip and my webcam came right on. I did have to readjust several times, as I would lose my webcam will snapping the front panel back on. After adjusting a few times and then very gently snapping the front panel on, I had no more issues with my webcam. Lets hope it stays that way. Thanks for the suggestion, worked great!

Wow, after trying everything I found this fix and it worked. On mine the connection had worked loose at the top and it was simple to plug it back in. Thanks
