XPS 15 9575 Audio and Video Driver issues

I've had the XPS 15 9575 since April, and I really do love it. However, I'm noticing some quirks and I wanted to post them here.

1. Cortana and the text-to-speech feature can't hear me. It looks to be similar to the thread that I'm linking below. It seems to be a Realtek driver issue. Dell support, please press on Realtek or Microsoft to work on this. You have a laptop with far field mics that can't far field.

I have only on once been able to make Cortana work with the microphone by doing the following:
win -> Manage audio devices -> Recording -> Microphone Array [properties] -> levels -> 95

2. I can't update the Radeon driver

I get a notification that there is a new Radeon driver available (18.2.1), and I'm on 17.40.xxx. I try to install it and the installer crashes every time. It's awesome that we're getting updates, but less so when we can't apply them.

Here is a way to get the latest Realtek sound driver.  It solved my sound drop-out problems:

Interesting, that is the version of the audio driver that I have. My version of Windows is 1709. One other thing that I ran into was that my system d/led a firmware update as I was posting my original comments. After the reboot, Cortana was picking my voice up, but I had to be somewhat loud and deliberate. After going through the "Check the microphone" wizard in the Cortana settings, I'm back to my first experience of Cortana not responding to me.

I'll check Windows Update to see if I can get onto 1809 and then whether things improve.

As for the radeon updates, it's confusing to have the alerts for new drivers show up at all.

You have the latest Dell driver for Radeon. Video driver updates must come from Dell since they are customized by Dell. Latest version is Version: 17.400.1034 A01 April 30 2018

Cortana issue might be a windows 10 problem. Make sure you have the latest Windows Update that corrected some problems with 1803.

I updated to 1809 last night and I am up-to-date on all of my drivers. Now, I have both Cortana and Voice Dictation failing to recognize what I say.

What's odd is that I can get Cortana to respond to a "Hey Cortana" request, but then she won't recognize a single word after that. Voice dictation is worse in that it might pick up one word, but fail to recognize any other word. I have an American accent, I'm enunciating my words, and I'm being deliberately loud.  I know that the microphone array is working well because I had a conversation over Skype using the mic array and the other party had no issue hearing me.

So, am I the only one experiencing issues with Cortana and Voice Assist (win build 1809) ?

I Just received my XPS 15 9575 and I am experiencing the same problem with Cortana. She says "Sorry about that, I didn't hear anything" 1-2 seconds after clicking the microphone icon, or seemingly immediately after making any noise, such as clapping. What's especially odd is that it was working fine when setting up windows (account creation, accepting windows terms of service, etc.).

Did you ever find a solution to this problem? I've tried most every standard fix I can find online with no luck. I'm currently on Windows build 1709. I'll update an see if that makes any difference.

I don't have the 9575 so I can't speak to the driver situation but the built-in microphone is a fairly basic component.  Since it seems to work on most systems, and is very important to Microsoft, it should work normally.

In this situation, it might be a good thing to use the Voice Recorder to see exactly what is being heard by the Mic.  The Settings-System-Sound page, in later upgrades, may give you other options.  You should be able to find a volume control for the microphone to see if it happens to be turned down.

There may be a setting which allows Cortana to use the microphone and doing the check with it may tell you what is wrong.

I am having a similar issue with my XPS 9575, except Cortana seems to be fine, but nothing else works. When I test the mix in the support app I get nothing, but I can pick up mouse clicks in Skype and Discord, just no voice.

I also have been hoping Dell will get a Realtek sound driver update to fix these issues!

I'm having the same problem but even when the mic array is set to 100 it doesn't work.  I guess i'll need to open a ticket.
