Vostro 5468 - TPM not visible after BIOS update

Hi, I upgraded BIOS from 1.11.0 to 1.12.0 but after that there is an error message every boot:

"Alert! TPM device is not detected."

TPM is not visible in BIOS or Windows, drivers for everything should be the latest.

Downgrade is not possible (even as this option is selected in BIOS). Intalling the update again doesnt help.

When there will be new BIOS to repair this?

Or anything I can do more?

Thank you in advance for any suggestions

I have the same problem except I have an Vostro 5568. I usually don't update for just this reason but Dells site said this bios was an urgent update. Whats worse is my laptop is just over a year old and only a month out of warr. I can't roll back back and reinstalling did not work.

I have a Vostro 5568 too and facing the same problem. I downloaded Vostro_5468_1.11.0 bios driver to see if this fixes the problem. Unfortunately, it doesn't.

How could an organization like Dell release drivers without proper QA? Why take something which works and then break it?

Does anyone from the Dell customer support has any update for us please?

uninstalL TPM from the Device Manager.

Next reload Intel Chipset Driver.

TPM is now intel based.

Trusted Platform Module (TPM 2.0) - TPM 2.0 is a microcontroller that stores keys, passwords, and digital certificates. A discrete TPM 2.0 also supports Intel® vPro™ Technology and Intel® Trusted Execution Technology (Intel® TXT).

@speedstep

the Thing is that the TPM is not detected in the BIOS in the first place so obviously it's not listed in Device manager.

i tried to reinstall the Chipset driver , didn't help.

Yeah! Dell is Brilliant

as it's not enogh that the vostro 15 5568 is geniusly designed.

they send updates that cause problems and not being responsible about that.

the vostro TPM firmware is not available for some reason!

I've been in contact with the "Support" they offered me to replace the motherboard and make me pay for their mistake.

TPM is not firmware its hardware.  Vostro 14 5468 laptop is not listed as a model that comes with TPM.  Its definitely an option not a guaranteed configuration. There were firmware updates from 1.2 to 2.0 on very old systems.  The 5468 is not one of those. Intel Core i5 7th Gen is typical configuration.  TPM is not available in all countries.   This model is from 2016 and its now 2020.  Saying the bios update broke something is not a method for getting more than the standard 3 year warranty.  You get what you pay for.   I do not see a bios version 1.12.0

This model is new enough that you could try BIOS recovery.

BIOS Recovery 2 Any system that is shipped after December 2015 that has the Intel SkyLake Chipset
BIOS Recovery 3  Any system that is shipped after August 2016 or with the Intel Kaby Lake Chipset

TPM is an option and it cannot be added later by end user.

You did not mention the bios version you tried.

If it was there before write down what sata operation is set to and clear the cmos.

Then see if it shows up in bios as an option.

Many Dell models will lose TPM if its disabled in bios aka its a one way trip.  Your model if it came with it had TPM/Intel PTT not the classic TPM chip.  On newer models under F2 security PTT must have a checkbox to ON before TPM will show up as an option in bios. Some Dell laptops will be equipped with the Intel Platform Trust Technology (PTT). This technology is part of the Intel System on Chip (SoC) and is a firmware-based TPM version 2.0.  So there may not be ANY listing for TPM security but there will be a listing for PTT security.  You may also have to Clear the PTT first and restart.

If TPM is not present in F2 bios setup, try the following troubleshooting steps:

  1. Update the system BIOS to the latest version available on the Dell Support Website / Drivers & downloads .
  2. Power off the system then disconnect the AC power cord and leave the system unplugged for about 30 seconds.
  3. Reconnect AC power to the system and boot to the BIOS setup using the F12 one time boot menu.
To make sure TPM is turned on, you will need to press F2 to enter System Setup. Then go to the Security section and check that TPM is set to On under the TPM security settings.  If there is no such listing look for PTT Settings under security.
  4. If TPM is restored, continue with normal system operation.
  5. If TPM is still missing from BIOS setup, please contact Technical Support for further assistance.

Removing all batteries including cmos and discharge may be required to reset.

I also have this problem with a Dell Vostro 5468 after applying the 'Urgent' 1.12 BIOS through SupportAssist. I contacted Dell, who despite attempting to resolve the problem eventually gave up and suggested I sent the laptop to them at my expense only for them to quote on how much they would charge me to fix it!

Yes the laptop is ~3 years old and therefore out of warranty, but Dell can't just release a flawed BIOS that they deem as 'Urgent' and expect the customer to pay to fix the issue.

Does anyone know of a command line switch that can be used to prevent the "BIOS Update blocked due to unsupported downgrade" error? The BIOS option is already set to allow downgrades, but doesn't do its job.

Thanks all. Fingers crossed Dell get enough support calls to release a new fixed BIOS.

Hopefully this is useful to someone.

I 'upgraded' the BIOS on a Dell Vostro 5468 to v1.12.0 as advised by the SupportAssist application - labelled as Urgent. Following this, I experienced the "Alert! TPM device is not detected" every time I started the laptop. I needed a way to load an old BIOS prior to this issue.

Don't follow what I did below unless you're aware of the risks and know exactly what you're doing. If it goes wrong, you could end up with a laptop that won't boot at all! I had nothing to lose as it's only a test laptop for me, which is why I tried it.

1. Used DISKPART to assign a drive letter to the "EFI System Partition" - In my case this was Disk 0, Partition 2 and was assigned to d:

2. Downloaded BIOS v1.11.0 from the Dell website (Vostro_5468_1.11.0.exe)

3. Used a command prompt (run as administrator) to copy the downloaded BIOS executable file (Vostro_5468_1.11.0.exe) to d:\EFI\Dell\Bios\Recovery

4. Renamed the existing BIOS_CUR.RCV file to BIOS_CUR.RCV.IGNORE

5. Renamed Vostro_5468_1.11.0.exe to BIOS_CUR.RCV

6. Shut down the laptop and then unplugged the power cable (still had battery power)

7. Held down Ctrl+Esc and plugged in the power cable

8. Waited until the 'BIOS Recovery Menu' application to launch and then let go of the keys

9. Selected to 'Recover BIOS'

This successfully applied v1.11.0 of the BIOS, which I haven't been able to achieve through any other method.
