Ubuntu 20.04 on Dell G3 15 3590 - Only booting with nomodeset

Hello guys!

I recently did a dual boot on a Dell G3 3590, which i bought 4 months ago. However, I'm having a particular problem. My linux only boot if there is the "nomodeset" parameter on the grub, however, by adding this parameter, I have no sound in my system (I believe nomodeset disable the i915 driver). So, It's a paradox, or I boot, or I have shound, if boot, no sound, to have sound, no boot. I have already tried a lot of things, installing the Nvidia proprietary driver didn't solve; i915 is upgraded and not blacklisted, kernel is upgraded.

Well, does anyone are having the same issues? Going back to 18.04 LTS will be my only option? Or won't work as well?

Instead of "nomodeset" you can use "snd_hda_intel.dmic_detect=0" to make sound work but microphone won't work. Maybe it is also required to put "options snd-hda-intel model=laptop-dmic" into /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf file.

The same thing happened to me, and the maximum number of alternatives (I am not familiar with machine language and hardware) discovers that it is an impossible problem to correct by mere mortals.

Like you I ended up going back to 18, as soon as an updated Ubuntu image is available I will try again with the posted solution to your (our) problem as it looks trivial to implement. Hope it works out, take care!

Ended up switching to Fedora, which works flawlessly and feels much snappier overall than the stock Ubuntu in daily use. Why it takes Canonical so long to update certification on these models is beyond me.
