What is Video Card?

The video card is the part responsible for generating the images you see on the screen, such as a web page, a PowerPoint presentation or even a video. Also known as a graphics processing unit (or GPU), it can range from basic "integrated graphics" to larger and more powerful (dedicated) expansion cards. The more powerful the graphics card, the more frames per second (fps) can be seen at higher resolutions.

Integrated Cards & Dedicated Graphic Cards

  1. Integrated Graphics Cards

    Integrated graphics cards use less power and make less noise than dedicated graphics cards. However, the integrated ones provide the least dynamic visual experiences. Integrated cards are common in laptops and computers designed for relatively light workloads as they are more energy efficient (though less powerful) than dedicated cards.

    Best for: A good balance of performance and efficiency for a wide variety of tasks and workloads, ideal for most people who use typical office productivity applications and occasionally play video.

  2. Dedicated Graphics Cards

    Dedicated graphics cards from NVIDIA and AMD are more powerful in video processing and creating digital or gaming content than integrated cards. These apps provide real-time visual experiences (instead of just playing or streaming recorded video). Dedicated cards use more energy than integrated cards. They can limit battery life on notebooks. They also generate more heat, which can turn on a fan or similar noisy cooling solutions.

    Best for:  High performance for visual content creators and other users whose computing workloads are visually demanding.
