The adoption of the Dell PowerEdge VRTX has been impressive, especially among small and mid-size organizations looking for an all-in-one solution, from a single vendor – just look at how customers Emerson and Carestream have been talking about us. The concept of enabling remote offices, small business or branch offices to deploy a powerful “cloud in a box” solution is attractive to IT managers and administrators because it enables them to get a predictable cost picture while easing the burden of application and system management. VRTX facilitates the deployment and management of small private clouds, a trend that is gaining momentum as it resonates with small and mid-size organizations. In my article “Enabling desktop virtualization with Dell PowerEdge VRTX”, I highlighted the benefits of using PowerEdge VRTX in virtual desktop environments, and announced the availability of a reference architecture based on Microsoft Windows Server 2012 that supports Remote Desktop Host Sessions and pooled windows 8 VMs. Now, we are announcing the availability of a new VRTX reference architecture based on VMware Horizon View.
The need is clear. According to the 2008 census bureau, there are 12.8 million business in the US with 1000 or less employees. In the APJ region, according to the Chinese Government report, 60% of the GDP of China is generated by the 4.3 million small-to-medium enterprises.
The challenge to date had been that most of the desktop virtualization infrastructure solutions target only big enterprises instead of small-medium business or remote and branch office environments. Desktop virtualization with Dell PowerEdge VRTX, designed for small and mid-size organizations, fills this gap with a simple device that includes server, storage and networking components in one chassis that takes up a small footprint and uses standard AC power (100V-240V). This allows Dell to remove complexity in the management and deployment of the virtual desktop infrastructure with a small, quiet and affordable solution.
The Dell Cloud Client Computing reference architectures available today support up to 500 task worker users per VRTX device. Dell will continue evolving this architecture with future density improvements and expanding to other virtual desktop software platforms.
The adoption rate of desktop virtualization will be further accelerated by targeting user segments that may have been previously unavailable.
Small companies are the next area of growth. PowerEdge VRTX for desktop virtualization is an essential component to the Dell Cloud Client Computing portfolio, which integrates services, datacenter components, software and end points into a single tested preconfigured solution.
With PowerEdge VRTX, Dell simplifies the deployment of virtual desktops helping midsized to small organization do more with less.
