Media impacts everything, from end user devices to enterprise storage platforms and everything in-between. Moore’s Law continues to drive the media evolution along with von Neumann’s Law or Memory Design, basically stating that the fastest memory will always be as close to the CPU as possible while memory size will increase, along with latency, but cost will be reduced. That theory is as true today as it was in the 1940s.
At Dell World, I sat down with Danny Cobb (@Dcobbweb), Dell Fellow and VP of Emerging Media, and we talked NVHMCI, NVMe, M.2, 14G, new form factors and the ultimate question, what’s next? But I feel like every time I talk to Danny, it’s the same conclusion. From the original NVMHCI (Non-Volatile Memory Host Controller Interface Specification) created by Dell, Microsoft and Intel in 2008, NVMe (Non-Volatile Memory Extension), NVMe represents the next step in that evolution. But like traditional Flash, it’s not NVMe that unlocks customer value, it’s the software and architecture.
Software Enables Media, from the Client to the Cloud.
