    • Hillcrest Academy

      Kalona, IA Prize: Anytime, Anywhere Learning Setup

      For Hillcrest Academy, participating in the Erase E-waste sweepstakes helped build community and student success. In 2019, Hillcrest, a private high school in Kalona, Iowa, had extremely slow laptops and teachers and students were frustrated when using digital tools. Angela Snakenberg, Business Teacher and Technology Specialist at Hillcrest, saw a flyer for the Erase E-waste sweepstakes and decided to get her community involved. “Even if we didn’t win, holding an Erase E-Waste drive is a good motivator for everyone to clean out their old junk,” Snakenberg said. The school held a contactless recycling drive and filled up a pickup truck, trailer, and 15-passenger van without seats twice. The school was thrilled to hear they had won and chose the Anytime, Anywhere Learning Setup. “Everyone has a modern device they can use in class since we won the Dell Technologies Erase E-Waste Sweepstakes. We no longer worry about using technology during lessons because our Dell laptops start up right away,” said Snakenberg. The school brings its large, rolling screen monitor to help with visuals and collaborative learning at large events and have even put it in the lobby during basketball games so families can watch a livestream. With its new technology solutions, Hillcrest is boosting student engagement and showing the community what’s possible with a little digital imagination.

      • St. Anthony Catholic School

        Columbus, TX Prize: Anytime, Anywhere Learning Setup

        Like many privately funded schools, St. Anthony Catholic School (SAS) struggled to procure IT solutions without increasing tuition costs. SAS, which serves 3k through 8th grade students in Columbus, Texas, had slow devices that could no longer support core software and educational apps. Some teachers did not have school-issued devices for home use, a serious issue when COVID-19 struck. When SAS learned they could win IT gear and recycle electronic waste, the Parent Teacher Committee immediately took action and managed a four-day Erase E-Waste event. SAS won the sweepstakes and chose the Anytime, Anywhere Learning Setup prize package and today, students can access the apps they need to boost learning. The school also rolled out a new hybrid computer lab on wheels. John O’Leary, principal at SAS, said, “Having the laptops and cart from Dell Technologies makes it possible to continue our digital curriculum and maintain social distancing.” By replacing a portable projector in the cafeteria with the new Dell Technologies interactive touch monitor, staff can gather for professional development, multiple grades can meet and share multimedia resources, and stream events. “Students’ learning curves go up when they have technologies like the devices we won through the Dell Technologies Erase E-Waste Sweepstakes. Our job is to provide the IT and guidance and then get out of the way and let them learn,” O’Leary said.

        • E.S.T.E.A.M. Academy

          Round Rock, TX Prize: Anytime, Anywhere Learning Setup

          E.S.T.E.A.M. Academy needed new laptops and other IT equipment to facilitate digital learning and club activities on a limited budget. When E.S.T.E.A.M., a private K-12 micro-school located in Round Rock, Texas, found out it could win innovative gear by facilitating an e-waste recycling event, word spread fast. When COVID-19 hit, students embraced social-distancing measures and carried on with their efforts, recycling thousands of unused electronic items from the community. E.S.T.E.A.M learned it was a sweepstakes winner and chose the Anytime, Anywhere Learning Setup. “We use the Dell display as a green screen. Heroes [students] can put any background that they want on it — they can be in the Rocky Mountains or Sahara Desert — and then wear a costume to add to the realism,” said Justin Durban, E.S.T.E.A.M. enrichment guide, marketing manager and IT support specialist. Students also quickly learned to use the MakerBot 3D printer for club activities, using it to create custom propeller guards for a drone, designing keychains to sell as a fundraiser, and more. Through their efforts, E.S.T.E.A.M helped their community, solved their technology challenge, and is inspiring the imaginations of their students.

          • Mills College

            Oakland, CA Prize: Anytime, Anywhere Learning Setup

            Mills College, located in Oakland, California, is a nationally renowned liberal arts women's college with graduate programs for all genders. Mills is committed to providing access to education to as many talented students as possible in an environment that respects individuality, builds community and encourages student success. Mills was named one of the best green colleges by the Princeton Review in 2022. The Mills sustainability team hosted a recycling drive as part of the Erase E-waste Sweepstakes to help keep electronic waste out of landfills. The college was a 2021 Sweepstakes winner and Mills chose the Anytime, Anywhere Learning Setup. Mills is excited to incorporate the prizes into their arts programs and are especially excited about the 3D printer.

            • Kenneth R. Olsen Middle School

              Burlington, NJ Prize: Esports and Makers Learning Setup

              Kenneth R. Olson Middle School, located in Burlington County, New Jersey, is part of the Tabernacle School District. The community public school district serves students in pre-kindergarten through eighth grade from Tabernacle Township. After hearing about the Erase E-waste Sweepstakes, the school’s fifth graders went all out. They held an electronic waste collection drive, tallied up the number of electronic devices used by students and staff, created and signed their own Erase the E-waste Pledge, and reached out to their community about the benefits of responsibly recycling e-waste. The entire fifth grade participated in the Sweepstakes and many of their Erase E-waste posters are hanging proudly in businesses around Tabernacle. The school chose the Esports and Makers Learning Setup prize package and is thrilled to be able to hire an Esports coach to help teach and engage their students.

              • South Central Unified School District

                Coldwater, KS Prize: Esports and Makers Learning Setup

                South Central Unified School District is located in Coldwater, Kansas. The district prides itself on challenging students with a highly relevant curriculum and providing support for their endeavors and dreams within a safe and caring learning environment. As part of the Erase E-waste Sweepstakes, the South Central Middle School leadership team hosted a drive to collect used electronics, helping their community get rid of and responsibly recycle numerous old electronics. After winning the Sweepstakes, the district chose the Esports and Makers Learning Setup and is excited to put their new technology to use.
